Boussingault, Helmholtz and Neumayer Craters new
      #5306042 - 07/06/12 09:06 PM Attachment (58 downloads)

The view in this sketch is part of the southeastern highlands not far from the limb (and terminator) on this single day past full Moon. There were two reasons why I chose this region for sketching. The libration of this part of the Moon was very favorable and crater Boussingault (133 km.) is an unusual lunar feature because it is not only large but has a 72 km. diameter crater sitting off center on its floor called A. Boussingault A destroyed any central peak that might have been there before impact. This region becomes interesting to view as the shadows grow during the early waning gibbous phase.
Ewen Whitaker (1954) drew an excellent, famous, classic, south polar map which includes most of Boussingault.
[E.A. Whitaker (1954) The Lunar South Pole Regions, Journal British Astronomical Association, 64, pp 234-242]
Northwest of Boussingault and A is a triple complex of overlapping craters (Boussingault B, E and C.). The more typical large highland craters to the east of Boussingault are Helmholtz (92 km.) and Neumayer (77 km.) with their large flat floors.

Sketching:
For this sketch I used: black Canson paper, white and black Conte’
pastel pencils and blending stumps.
Telescope: 10 inch f/ 5.7 Dobsonian and 9 mm eyepiece 161x

Date: 07-05-2012 05:10 - 06:20 UT
Temperature: 30° C (86° F)
Hazy, humid, calm
Seeing: Antoniadi III
Colongitude: 104 °
Lunation: 15.6 days
Illumination: 97 %
Altitude of Moon about 26°
Libration in Lat. -04° 53'
Libration in Long. +06° 11'

I like the fluency of your technique Frank, which preserves the artistic element without sacrificing accuracy. Great drawing!

Ian, Jef and Tom,

Thank you all.

A little more challenging than usual on this warm humid night.

Thank you for that impressive sketch. The regions near the limb are harder to sketch and therefore underrated her. But theyare worth the effort.

Uwe,

It is great to hear from you again and thank you.
You and I both know how much fun it is to pick out one of the many targets on our lunar neighbor and try to capture the view.

Rutilus,

Thanks. There will be another chance and slighter better libration to see Boussingault next month from August 3rd to August 5th.

Frank

Pete, Thank you.

I am looking for another chance at sketching this region in early August if the weather cooperates.

Hi Frank,

Nice sketch as always. I don't get the chance to visit CN forums too often but enjoy your sketches.

Nice paint job on your scope as well

Best,

Eric Jamison

Hello Eric,

Thank you for your kind words on my sketch and paint job on the telescope; I am glad you got a chance to get over here.
I sure hope you have some time to get out, observe and sketch the night sky targets yourself.

Frank
