I've been observing for 47 yrs now(age 55) and like most folks here have had many (treasures) telescopes. The scopes change as my life has changed.Looking back there are three that come to mind that I wish were still mine.First is a Jaeger/Edmund 5"f5 rft that I built when I was fifteen. The Edmund portion was the EQ mount.I pushed alot of grass to save for that baby and was only able to complete it with some aid(money) from my mom.The fun I had building the scope coupled with the rft views remain a very fond memory.Next is a fully loaded Meade 1266 that I had in my observatory 20 years ago.Mine even had the 4.25" viewfinder. The model I had performed splendidly with solid optics and perfect mechanics.Aside from that it was way cool, always impressing visitors to my observatory. Finally it recent years I most regret selling an early run Orion 7" mak.To this day I miss the great planetary views provided by that ota.I commonly had it at 500x with sharp details and sometimes was able to push it higher.Circumstances changed and I had to sell it but I never stop missing that one.Im fortunate enough to have plenty to still play with(sct, maks and rfrs) and in fact enjoy them all immensely. Those three though bring the fondest memories!

Welcome to Cloudynights, Mdowns! From that history you've given us, I'm sure that you'll be an excellent fit here in the Classic Telescopes forum!

That 1266 must have been an impressive instrument... top of the line Meade, probably among the best GE reflectors ever made.

edited to add: Oops! I see you've been registered for a while now... well, welcome anyway! CN/CT can never have too many posters!

I would say this is one of my "sacred cows", a nice 5" Jaegers RFT at f/5.

I would also have to include the R. E. Brandt 6 inch f/16 folded refractor. I doubt that I will ever sell this one. As I have posted elsewhere, the optics are outstanding.

I almost forgot this one.
It's not going anywhere until I know who made it. Even after knowing it probably will be a lifer here. Maker unknown.

Hi Robert.

I was wondering about that scope!

If it could only talk! it is such a neat scope. I got severely side tracked with my crazy "geodetic survey transit" idea until Dave (DAVIDG) explained what the double levels are for, thanks Dave!
But I'm no closer to knowing who made it.
Just look at this workmanship, awesome!

I wonder if that Eastern Optical mount with the German OTA on it that's been talked about here on the CL thread is something like this?

It's too far from me, and a bit too expensive (and too "new"), but rather interesting nevertheless.

-Tim.

Me, too.

I don't get out to dark sites with my PB as often as I'd like, and use smaller scopes at home, but I couldn't imagine ever parting with my Portaball.

Fun to see the both of these together. Each model have passed through my hands years ago and contributed much to my love of astronomy and all things'telescope'.

(I was referring to Barrys rv6 and palomar jr in the pic several postings back)

Wow Tim I'm going to research the "Eastern Science Co."
http://www.easternscience.com/about.htm
You just never know. Someday we will stumble across the maker of my telescope and what a glorious day that's going to be, oh boy!

Actually those two scopes pictured together belong to Rod Mollise, they are not mine. I did have an Edmund 4.25" Palomar Jr. though. It was my Christmas present in 1964. Two things I remember about that scope that make me cringe today. I was in to labeling things so I wrote 4.25" Reflector in big red letters using my mother's nail polish on the side of the tube near the focuser. My unique writing style would remind you of what you would see on a kid's lemonade stand. The other thing was when the little girl across the street dropped a brillo pad down the tube on top of the mirror. Even at that age (12) I knew enough to not be very happy about that!

I sold the scope for $45 at age 15 or 16. I guess I was more interested in "cute chicks" than "heavenly heifers"!

Sacred cow?....to some here this might be more like the "golden calf". They are so rare that the likelyhood of finding a replacement should I have a brain lapse isn't very probable. Just look at how it dwarfs the Selsi 80mm x 1200mm. Only drawback is that the 175lbs. takes it out of the grab 'n go league. I put casters on the feet now it's easy as pie to move it out of the observatory corner for observing duties. The images are to die for especially the double stars. Mike
