New at Binocular astronomy...
      #5327 - 07/30/03 06:39 AM

Hello everone,

I've jsut started star gazing using binoculars (Tento 20X60s) and I must
say the results so far have been rather discouraging.

The bet I've been able to do so far : M31, M22, M25, M13 M92.

I can see Eta UMi only with indirect viewing which I guess makes
the skys in my area about Mag 4.5 - 5.0

Can anyone suggest any strategies that might give me better results?
I have never seen my binos reviewed - could this be lat least part
of the problem?

Incidentally I have built a parallelogram mount for my Tentos which
works quite well..

Scott

Hello Scott ,

There ARE sevral reviews / reports of these Russian 20 x60s available in various places on the net. including one by Todd Gross at www.weatherman.com .

These are very inexpensive binoculars usually with quite a few mechanical problems , but Todd rates them as a "best buy" in spite of these handicaps .

Your " discouragement " might be as much related to poor viewing conditions as anything else .

It might be useful if you could compare the views through these with those through a few other pairs of binos such as 10 x 50s , 15 x 70s and 20 x 80s.
