I saw 61 Cygni for the first time through my 6" SCT at 61x. Really nice. Its a wide pair to begin with but for whatever reason i love the 200x view too. Wide as heck but satisfying. Perhaps because I feel like I am on the verge of being *with in* the system? I dont know. Looked purdy though.
17 Cygni was in my GOTO "Tour" list so I tried it. Im sure Ive seen it before as Cygnus is my most hunted doublestar constellation. At anyrate it was rather ho-hum.
Polaris. Ive ignored this one for so long I forgot how beautiful it is to observe. Brilliant primary and dim companion tucked in the glare at 61x. Seeing was horrendous this morning but with wide doubles like these mentioned it makes for easy low power observing thats still fun.
Epsilon Lyra in Pickering four is a fright. The orientation of the doubles PA was seen with care but the spurious disc was so buried within a fog of disturbed seeing diffraction fuzz, it was clear this was not a night for a nice object pair like this. It seems 6/10 is the starting point where less that 3" doubles start to become realistically doable.
Wide double fun in soft seeing.

That's a good one. A bright pair of yellows if I recall, or am I getting it mixed up with 16 Cygni (mild dyslexia kicking in).
.....Ok back after consulting SkySafari. Yeah, that's the one, a nice yellow double. 16 Cygni is by the blinking planetary.

It IS yellowy, but its got a distinct orange tinge to it. Its a K star double if I recall. I think its color shows up best at 25x per inch of aperture.

I too love 61 Cyg. Being a nearby star and having the history of having it's distance from our system measured first makes it's lovely appearance all the more appealing to me.

SkySafari says "chrome orange-red." I would call them orange.

I first saw this double 3 or 4 weeks ago and it instantly became a favorite! I know that Piazzi is who the star is named after, but does anyone know where the name "flying star" came from?
When I first found it, it had a "coppery" color in my C8 with Astro-Tech LR EPs. When I looked at it with my ES 68 and the C8, it was more yellow.

I believe the *flying star* is a name given for its proper motion against the starry background due to their [heh] close proximity to us and naturally the distant stars in the background.
Jack, Im with agreement that orange is more appropriate than red. Red to e is more of a carbon star, or M star color, while K stars are that sunny orange. Ive found that enlarging the pair to the point their airy doscs show helps the orange show well. LOL - but again - it isnt red to me either.

Thanks. I like "sunny orange." No matter what the final color designation--it's beautiful!

In my 10" dob, I've seen them as Pale Yellow and Golden Yellow, an easy double.

I stand corrected. This was a nice yellow and orange pair last night through my Z12 w/6mm Z-planetary sportin about 250X, and finally good seeing rounds' here.
My wife and stepdaughter confirmed yellow and orange as well (can't argue with fresh eyes!).
Beautiful pair, just beautiful!

I like Polaris quite a bit. I think my favorite doubles are a bright primary and a dim secondary.
