Hey all, whats the best way to locate U Cam? I cannot find an SAO number for it and thats what my CGEM uses unless I dont know all of its features which is VERY possible.

Thanks as always.

SAO 12870, according to Simbad and Sky Catalog 2000.0, Volume 1.

Good luck!

Best way for any variable star is to use the AAVSO Chart Plotter. For bright (binocular range) stars like U Cam, the A or B scale charts work best. (9 degree or 3 degree fields)

U Cam is easily found from its position relative to the arc of brightish stars just to its north. The arc of brightish stars is easily found (in binoculars) by imagining an equilateral triangle pointing northwards with alpha Persei and the Double Cluster at its other corners. Not much in Camelopardalis is easily found but this is one of the exceptions!

"Kemble's Cascade" is close to the other end of the arc of stars and is worth a look on its own account.

This is the first carbon star I sought out, using a 60mm refractor, after reading about it in Burnham's Celestial Handbook.
