It's a table/tray that helps you get the tube and forks onto the tripod and also has lots of convenient eyepiece holes. This one has a bidirectional level.

ScopeSaver is gone bye bye. They don't make the actual ScopeSaver tray any more. Peterson makes the Mount Assistant, but it doesn't have any eyepiece holes or anything. It's just wide enough to fit under my 12" LX200R with about an inch around the base to spare.

I've been trying to get my own ScopeSaver clone made, but so far the guys I've asked to do it have been taking their sweet time about it. I think I might end up resorting to the old standby: Plywood.

Lumicon makes a tray, and it looks pretty dang nice, but there you're going to be spending a wee bit o' cash, if you get the whole system. The tray by itself isn't too high, though.

How about polycarbonate? You should still be able to cut it with a router & hole saw.

After having made one for my own use, I'm taking another look. Anything I've been able to think of to use as a plate on top that would be thick enough to allow the use of countersunk screws also means having to re-do the threaded rod that holds the mount to the tripod. On the other hand...harking back to my days as a machine design person, when the mount is placed on the top of the tripod, it will rest on three points, and in order to position it properly above the center hole one only needs to slide it up against two points around the perimeter of the top of the tripod.
SO.....I'm trying to figure an easy way to attach two round posts of wood or aluminum or steel to the side of the top of the tripod to push the mount against. So far the easiest I can think of is to attach the dowels to a long hose clamp and clamp them in position. Another thought is to drill thru the dowels and the top of the tripod and bolt them in place. Of course, it would stand to reason that it would be advisable to place the dowels on the side of the tripod that always will be set up facing North on the GPS models and facing south on the Classic models. At least this would be so in the Northern hemisphere.

My original plans were to have a friend make one out of some material we use in the bowling industry for the kickbacks. Unfortunately, it never saw past my asking him. No big deal though. I have the Peterson, and it serves me perfectly. I just want to have the added benefit of the eyepiece tray part of it. Poly is a good idea, but the whole point is to try and make something decent at a low cost. The materials from works would have been free. Polycarbonate is kind of expensive for what it is.

I'm still working on plans, so once I figure out what I'm doing and make a prototype, I'll let everyone know.

Thank you all for the feedback. It looks like the mount assistant is worth the money.

Thanks again.

Oh, yea it is. Whenever I'm not on the Wedge, that mounting assistant comes out & I'm very GLAD that I have it.

I have trays for the LX200, RCX400 and LX90 That work with the Meade Standard Wedge, Superwedge, Ultrawedge, and X-Wedge in both Equitorial AND altazimuth modes. Go to http://www.shannontelescopics.com for complete information.

Mine came from Oceanside Photo & Telescope (OPT) also. They had a scratched one that I bought for less a couple of years ago. I never found the scratch. You might check with them.

does anyone know if the lumicon tray is compatible with mitty evo wedge for a 10" classic. Im thinking i can mound the lumicon tray on top of the tripod, then mount the mitty baseplate on top of the lunicom, then the mitty wedge to the mitty baseplate, but might need to get longer screws to go from the mitty baseplate through lumicon tray to tripod, is anyone using this setup? does anyone know thickness of lumicon tray?

There are thousands of these ScopeSavers out there and available on the used market. Suggest that you place a WANTED ad on astromart or even Cloudynights Classified. I would bet you get some replys very shortly...particularly if you run the ad on AM. BTW, I use one of these tables with my 10" LX200 and I love it.
