Curt, thanx for verifying my calculations. I used Cartes du Ciel which is accurate enough for most purposes. I also used JPL Horizons value of Jupiter's equatorial diameter from where I deduced its polar diameter. The weather conditions here have been lousy the past week and much better conditions seem not to be ahead. But, actually, the latest forecast told clear skies for Sunday morning.

I observed a grazing occultation of Jupiter on June 22, 1983. It was fascinating to see Jupiter and its moons (+the beautiful double star Beta Scorpii) glide by, and within, the lunar southern limb! The tiny part of Jupiter that was actually hidden by the moon was at most 2".1 of Jupiter's diameter, the same amount that will be inside the lunar limb on Sunday.

Once I calculated that a grazing lunar occultation of Jupiter during night time, as seen from a particular spot on Earth, is about as rare as a total solar eclipse. About once in 370 years on average.

You’re welcome, Timo. For precise occultation output, I input Aldo Vitagiliano’s Solex http://main.chemistry.unina.it/~alvitagl/solex/ position data into my otherwise homemade occultation software. The routines are those of Jean Meeus with modifications. I’ve confirmed that from Virsbo you indeed would have witnessed a graze in 1983, albeit with an algorithm less precise than Solex.

That’s interesting what you calculated regarding frequency. I’m not surprised that Jupiter grazes are similarly as rare as total eclipses at a particular location, since the amount by which the Moon appears larger than the Sun during a total eclipse is on average roughly equal to the average angular size of Jupiter.

The next daytime occultation of Jupiter visible from Virsbo will occur on 2019 NOV 28. The next nighttime occurrence will be 2037 OCT 31. Neither one will be a graze for Virsbo, but the 2019 event will be nearly so.

No, luck with the weather! It was overcast the whole morning. I couldn't see a trace of the lunar crescent behind the clouds. I was more fortunate during the Venus transit when I could follow Venus for 6 hours 28 minutes and missing only the ingress. I was observing from Abisko in extreme northern Sweden.

Better late than never. My report and photos of the event, well seen from Mitzpe Ramon, Israel.

Thanks for your wonderful photos and description, Ira. I'm so glad that you and your friends were able to witness the event. Next up is the August 13-14 occultation of Venus, but I'm afraid that Israel will be shut out: www.CurtRenz.com/moon
