PST Spectrum 60 From Denk - Compare to a SMII 60? new
      #5064985 - 02/10/12 07:18 AM

I'm wondering about the price/performance value of the Spectrum 60 upgrade from Denkmeier. Since it is only $600 to upgrade a PST to a 60mm scope, compared to more than twice that for a basic SM II 60, what are the main performance differences between the two aside from the size of the blocking filter which you can upgrade on the SM II to get a larger field of view.. Is the Spectrum 60 a true 60mm scope, comparable to the SM II 60? What about the size of the Hypalon filter? Will it perform the same?

I understand that not all PST's are created equal and there is a large performance gap between the best and the worst of the bunch. For the sake of this comparison, lets assume I have a "best of the bunch" PST.

A friend of mine had his PST re-done to the 60mm aperture by Denk. Quite frankly, I was less than impressed. If anything, the contrast of the system was a little lower than that of the original PST, so I probably won't be going that route. My friend likes his 0.6 angstrom Daystar T-Scanner on his 9.25 inch SCT better than his "modified" PST. Clear skies to you.

I have a Spectrum 60 and quitte frankly am quite disappointed. I did a shoot out with a lunt 60 some months ago and reeled back in disarray at the huge difference

Do you know if the one you looked through had been changed by Denk from a BF5 to a BF10?

Denk 60 no longer supplies BF10 - PST manufacturing is too poor to support the BF. Stock BF works great. Can bino with corrector. Lunt needs barlow. Spectrum is way better deal. Now PSTs are going for $200 more now though.

I had a look at Seeker's scope, the problem was the 'BF10' supplied by Denk. It is not a genuine coronado BF10, and quite simply it doesn't work.
Using the original BF5 or genuine BF10 the views through the Spectrum60 are great.

I had a few guys from the WAA club look thru PST 60 with BF5
they thought it was one of the best views thru PST they ever seen (larger size)

One problem with the Denk "upgrade" is that the inherently poor design of the PST focus device is not addressed.

And neither is the fact that the PST etalon is manufactured to a tolerance which gives 1.0A passband. The Lunt etalons are 0.7A. That makes a lot of difference.

Having said that, most are better than the specified tolerance, it is not unusual to find an occasional PST which has a 0.7A or better etalon.

Interesting; I wonder if the Lunt etalons are better than their nominal 0.7A specification?

In my experience, etalons (being hand finished) are all individuals, they vary quite a lote even within the same production batch.

I'm lucky in so far as I have a "0.7A" single stack Solarscope SF-100 etalon which appears to have about the same bandwidth as some "0.5A" double stacked sets that I've seen. The manufacturer knew it was a good one when he sold it to me.

I knew my Lunt LS35 had great bandwidth, but didn't realize how good it was until I checked it against the single-stack Lunt scopes at the NEAF Solar Party. I thought an LS60 would always beat an LS35. Now, I don't feel any need to upgrade to an LS60. I'll save up for an LS80 PT.
