Hello everyone.
I came across this article thread when doing a Goggle search and I thought I better join this site and personally reply here.
Yes, I am the owner of the Southern Astronomical Delights site eluded too by some people in this thread. To explain the recent problems in find it, my site has recently changed from Apple .Mac account, which was discontinued on the 30th June 2012, but transferred to my own site at www.southastrodel.com . Needless to say there has been a few problems, especially with images, some issues I'm still sorting out.

As for me, I am a self-proclaimed 'freelance' amateur astronomer for +40 years, and have been associated with the Astronomical Society of New South Wales. My particular interests are in far southern objects (a speciality subject, I'd think), historical southern astronomy, double stars and planetary nebulae. The last I am probably better known for, mainly because of my "Neat Southern Planetaries" Series feature on Doug Snyder's brilliant site at http://www.blackskies.org. [An updated version will soon appear on my web site.]

I once also was an avid visual observer but have now become more of popularist amateur because of the progression of a muscle related disability. (Still keen as mustard though!)

As for the star colour issues mentioned here, I will reply to each of the issues raised by those individuals.

I thank you all for your very kind words and the support here. It has certainly boosts on my own enthusiasm!

Bruce,

I read in detail your response here and honestly found this a little confusing. Most of the information here pertains to ultra-bright objects and seems unrelated to very low illuminations pertaining to visual stellar astronomy.

Most of the issues here are based on complex photochemical reactions in the eye, which in turn, sent to signals to the brain on colours and light intensity. Most of the problems with colour sensitivity at low illuminations is that the colour receptors (cones) switch off below a threshold, when the black and white rod receptors (rods) switch off at a much lower threshold. (This accounts for why we do not see any real colours at night.) At the response floor, the issues of visual seeing are very very complex and relate to many issues. I.e. Age, diet, etc.

This is what the earlier corresponder was wishing to be answered, I'd think.

Cheers,
Andrew

Pete,

Quote:

Dropping the aperture to 70mm increased the saturation to orange from yellow for the star as its brightness was reduced so it wasnt blowing out the subtle hues.

Couldn't something similar be accomplished by retaining the larger aperture, while defocusing the star image? I've noticed that sometimes this can help make color in stars a bit easier to see.

Mike

I've recently started webcamming doubles in the (forlorn) hope that the colours recorded might be more objectively accurate than visual observations. However, it's clear that the method of processing the image (in Registax 6 and PShop) can change the colours dramatically, and I've ended up concluding that I might as well adjust the image colours with the wavelet function and then subsequently in PShop Elements with Gaussian Blur until the result looks as close to my visual observation as possible, and not bother with objectivity!

While we're on the subject. One of my favorite books is "LES ÉTOILES - CURIOSITÉS DU CIEL" - "THE STARS - CURIOSITIES OF THE SKY". In it Camille Flammarion takes double-star colors to another level. Here are a few examples:

Albireo - yellow gold and sapphire
Sigma Capricorni - orange yellow and lilac
32 Eridani - yellow and blue topaz
a Herculis - ruby and emerald

Now those are some star colors!

The size and type of scope used makes a difference too.

In my 14" SCT, Gamma And is blue and yellow. Very pretty.
In the 120mm achro, it's burnt gold and sapphire. Heartbreakingly beautiful - it literally made me gasp the first time!

Big difference!
