Weather for Friday and Saturday nights looks awesome for some great viewing...I hope others can make it out...I'm banking on getting out Friday night myself. The moon will be on the way out..probably yielding some very nice views itself with lots of shadows to follow across the terminator.
Good luck everyone.
Rob

Well i did make it out tonight (Friday night). Just down the street to the terminally-light-polluted but good sky exposure playfield near my house. Skies were clear though very bright from the full moon. But a decent night for looking at the moon and splitting binary stars. I've got the AstroLeague Double Stars list about 75% done now.

It always takes a bit of work to persuade myself to go out, but when i do make it out i always feel good afterwards for not wasting a clear night. And now there's a whole weekend left to relax...

I did however discover that the playfield has sprinklers that turn on in the summer at 1am. But fortunately they started at the end of the field and i had time to do a quick packup and leave.

Glad some got out. It was great till the moon showed up..what a boiling mess till around 3:00 when the wind took over. The sky was horrible for any real viewing exercise..though some bright doubles were easily attainable. I wasn't impressed with M13 this time around...by the time I got to it the sky was so full of wash from the moon it was like looking at it through a freznel lens. The moon through all the scopes was a raindance...and it was impossible to take any good images of detail. I did take some time to work on the OB prior and found some mods I need to make to the cable system.

Apart from that the night was warm and awesome...the family came out for a bit(very unusual..but much apprecited).

This morning the wind was so bad..I was afraid for the roof..cuz I left it off last night...so I ran over at about 6:00 and closed it..just to make myself feel better. I'll open it up later today after the wind dies down and replace some pullies. Well here are some images of me(what a goof) with the scope...setting up and stuff. My wife took them..cuz I'm generally by myself so scale references are hard to find.

I'll go out later and download some moon pics I took and some faint doubles later.

Rob

Hi Rob
I got out too. Set up my "modified microscope camera"(the Quantix KAF6303E). I really have to say; I am more amazed every time I collect some images with this camera . I used the Baader 7nm Ha filter. was able to use 36 out of 40 X 5 minute sub exposures to generate this image. Scope was an AT66ED with a televue TRF2008 FF/FR.

I took the scope out last night/early this morning to show the moon to Matthew, my grandson. He liked it a lot. We were out roughly midnite - 1 am. and viewing conditions were good. With the 26 mm. Nagler T5, at 73X, the entire moon was hanging in the FOV, looking distinctly 3D spherical. The 9 mm. T6 (212X) gave crystal clear views, usually with slow, wavy undulations. Matthew loved it.

Robert, what is the subject of your gorgeous image?

Indeed..I spend quite some time in Cassiopeia as well taking apart the doubles...long before the moon rose.

Great image.

The heat was awful when I was viewing at 11:00...I just couldn't get a crisp focus through the waterfall.

I took this through the 5".

And my attempt at a moon image too. A composite of four images (I really need to get a focal reducer for my SCT). Yeah, there was some serious swimming going on. I'm still hoping someday for that mythical night of great seeing when i can get a really good image of the moon.

I got some time on the Pelican IC5070, The Pacman NGC281, and now I'll spend the rest of the night on the Soul IC1848.
All in Hydrogen Alpha 7nm filter

Yeah a composite image will definately show more detail because of the ability to stack the best images..add a bit of photoshop and there you go. I just took a single image with no mods cept rotating.

I've taken images before that were spot on crisp because the seeing was awesome...last night..not so.

Conditions like this tend to give good seeing down here in west Olympia. I think when there is a high like this it pools over us before it pours through the gap toward the ocean. I was out for a short time and the seeing was pretty good, and my mirror did not have to do much equalizing for the temperature. Too bad it was not a dark night. I would have stayed up to see more of the moon but it does not clear the trees for many hours after rising.

I tried out my new to me Denkmeier 14mm eyepiece and found that I like it quite well. It's not as spectacular as the Ethos, and eye placement is not quite as forgiving as the Ethos though not hard at all. Since I can't see the whole field of view in the Ethos there is not as much difference as one would expect. I get about 80 degree Afov in the Ethos when I'm looking comfortably, and have to tilt my head to see more. All of the field of view in the Denk is easy to see for me. A couple of other aspects of the Denk I like is that the it is very close to par-focal with my Ashperic 31 I use for low power, and has the same Afov also. I saw no difference in sharpness to the edge or clarity or other optical aspects. I have fairly complex astigmatism so I may not be able to pick out subtle differences.

Brad

Someone will have to teach me sometime how to stack complex moon images. I'm still new to this stuff. I did download this RegiStax free software and got it to run on Saturn with interesting (i won't say successful) results. But when i tried it on a moon image, the software just crashed.

For that moon image, i didn't actually stack, but manually stitched together four partial images in some primitive microsoft software (My SCT+DSLR won't capture the whole moon in one shot). If you look, you'll see the parts don't match up completely. I tried to use the best images of the series i took, but still i noticed the seeing is real variable even over a single image. I guess the magic of stacking would've helped there perhaps?

Speaking of magic, my Canon DPP software (my poor-man's substitute for Photoshop) has its own 'magic' setting, a checkbox called "Linear" under the RAW tab. I have no idea what it does, but it seems to help a lot with solar-system astrophotographs. In this case, I lost some detail on the right edge, but gained a lot of surface detail on the rest. Doesn't help for terestrial photos though...

I actually got quite a few images friday and Saturday nights. here is the colorized version of the posted picture above.

Then between friday and saturday I got enough data to create a mosaic

And then just for fun... The Pacman

Man, those are just incredible, Robert.

Brad, which Ethos are you comparing the Denk to?

I was reminded today that the Perseids are this coming weekend, and that the moon isn't too bad. We'll have a house guest from North Dakota that weekend and maybe I'll take her up to Sunrise Pt. I used to take the girls up there for the Perseids when they were small.

Thank You!! Between my having a horrible work schedule and the bad weather we've had in this region this year, I kind feel a little recovery from these last two nights.
