On the evening of July 26-27, 2012 after a very warm day in east Mesa, Arizona, I found myself enjoying a large glass of ice water with a clear, calm, sky and great seeing conditions at first quarter Moon. Clouds filled the heavens to the southwest but parked there for hours without moving. I had not planned to sketch but when I pointed the 6 in. scope at the Moon I raced back indoors to find materials for creating a sketch. I returned outdoors with a hard cover book for a paper backing, copy paper, black ink pen, some soft graphite pencils, one Conte' black pencil and some poor erasers (black paper with white Conte' pencils would have been ideal). The rims of Clavius D and C were beautifully illuminated of the floor of Clavius which was in total blackness. At first quarter Moon there are so many targets to choose from but this was the one that really caught my eye on this magnificent warm evening.
Sketching: For this sketch I used: white copy paper, No 2 graphite pencils, black ink pen, black Conte' pencil. After scanning, brightness was decreased (-2) and contrast increased (+2) using Microsoft Office Picture Manager.
Telescope: 6 inch f/ 7.2 Dobsonian and 6 mm eyepiece 183x Dates: 7-27-2012, 05:00-05:45 UT Temperature: 38° C (100° F) mostly clear, calm Seeing: Antoniadi I-II Colongitude: 13° Lunation: 8 days Illumination: 59.7%

These are not things we are really able to plan. :-)
Nice sketch! Such a nearly black crater is hard to capture.

Fine sketch! Reminds me of a sketch under similar illumination I did a half year ago.

Uwe and Jef,
Thank you both.
Uwe - I think you are correct nearly always because of weather and time issues.
Jef- Very nice sketch of Clavius, I remember this one. Your sketch is much cleaner than mine.

Frank - Great capture of Clavius. Sunrise over Clavius is a great sight in telescopes of all sizes.

Tom, Rutilus and Jean,
Thank you all for the nice words about my sketch. It was a memorable night for seeing quality. All the large craters present great sunrises and sunsets. Clavius is particularly good.

Frank, a fine record of what is surely one of my favorite lunar objects easy to find and full of interesting detail!

Frank,
You seized the opportunity and produced a fine drawing. A dedicated AA like yourself could never let such good seeing conditions get by you.
I'm surprised no one has alluded to that other sunrise at Clavius--when the Sun's rays first hit the excavated monolith discovered buried under the floor of Clavius.

Michael,
Thank you, I just need a sketching fix from time to time especially when conditions are great for it.
"I'm surprised no one has alluded to that other sunrise at Clavius--when the Sun's rays first hit the excavated monolith discovered buried under the floor of Clavius." --...Sorry Michael but I'm afraid I can't do that...
