The seller meant well. He was aware that he was missing a cap for the visual back, and so decided to plug the hole in the hope of protecting the interior of the scope.

I apologize for the bozo remark. It was uncalled for and thoughtless.

Have you actually used a vacuum hose to successfully remove something from inside an SCT, or are you imagining a possibility?

Yep, used the flexible hose technique going through the secondary opening (of a friends fastar compatible scope). The idea was to remove a couple of nuts that got dropped inside the ota. Going through the secondary opening meant that we didn't have to pull the corrector. The scope (another C11 like mine) was very well corrected and we didn't want to mess with the optical correction. A few years later we did pull the corrector and completely re shim and re installed it without any issues, but at the time pulling the secondary was something we didn't want to do if we could help it.

I have not gone up through the baffle tube opening, and while it's obviously more restrictive it shouldn't be a big issue especially if you use the wire wrap trick as well and the paper towel ball is up against the secondary mirror.

You have to watch the vacuum cleaner when you do this since the opening in the small flexible hose is going to make the motor on the vacuum work very hard ... it's often easy to overheat the motor if you don't also allow a little extra "bleed" to occur (a small opening in addition to the end of the flexible hose). If you position this bleed hole correctly you can place a finger over it while vacuuming to temporarily increase the suction.

The amount of suction at the opening of the little hose is very surprising. I actually used it to pickup nuts ... with a small bit of screen stuck over the end the nuts stuck hard and were easily lifted out.

Neat trick! The hose's tiny opening could be taped over the long slot in my vacuum's crevice tool, so that there was more bleed than suction. Having noticed that the "paper towel" is actually a few much softer tissues, it would not take much to stick it to the hose and draw it out. The idea is not to vacuum it per se, but to use a slight vacuum to stick the tissue to the hose so it may be withdrawn. For metals, we might use magnets. For tissues, ever so slight vacuums. Tempting...

Getting help from one's club is always the best advice. Funny thing is, my club is mostly reflectors, many of which the members built. There is stunning ability there. A few folks have CATs, but no one has yet serviced them. And, it's summer, folks are away.

Typical of me, if, with apologies, maddeningly, I gather my facts thoroughly before attempting tasks that then prove not so impossible as they did at first.

Yeah; if I had help, I'd drive to the end of our vast realm, but I'll manage. The Allen keys are already looking as though they'd feel comfortable in my hand.

I have the scope on approval, but will buy it. No repairs until I've paid and the deal is complete. That's fair to the seller.

Joe -

I think Mark's vacuum idea is an easy one to try. Before I got my old C8 serviced by larry (Orion61) I attempted to vacuum what i thought was lint from the inside of my corrector (turns out it was fungus! yuck! )

But I have to admit, that using the vacuum was pretty easy. I used a kid-toy small flexible hose which i taped on my wife's eletrolux hose and wiggled it in there. If you were to tip the tissues onto the corrector from the primary, I think it would be rather easy to suck up or have the tissue adhere to the hose. In any case its quite simple to hold the hose in the tube without it touching the corrector. Give it a shot.

Al

I wonder whether those recommending agsinst vacuuming imagined my creating a tornado or hurricane inside the telescope, in the hope of sucking out the tissue incidentally, along with vast volumes of fast-moving air. It's hard for me to imagine how gentle suction against a soft hose could damage anything, or why removing the currently safe, clean-enough corrector could be less risky. We're talking about as strong a vacuum as would be created when drinking a soda through a straw. I might even skip the vacuum cleaner, and just suck the tissue against the hose by mouth! Once it got wedged in the baffle tube, stronger suction could be applied to drag it through, or a grabber tool could be inserted well away from fragile optics.

She loves me... She loves me not... remove corrector... gentle suction...

Hmmm. Well if we're supposed to get creative you could spray the paper towel with a sugar vinegar mist and leave the tube outside to attract vinegaroons.. They will lay eggs on the paper towel and the hatchlings will eat it up.

Then gently mist the inside of the c8 with insecticide. Place in the oven to bake at low temp, about 150 degrees.

When the vinegaroons are all dried out you can shake the SCT up and down, corrector plate at ceiling. On each down stroke a few of the vinegaroon corpses will fall out the baffle tube. When there's just a few pieces left, that won't matter to the tube's functioning, and you can just use it....

Uncle Rod you could be on to somthin' dad gum it. I magnifying glass to set the paper towel on fire. The ash will easily be sucked out for the rear of the scope via a vac.

Another option is half a cup of gas, squirt inside, toss in a match and roast weaners at the same time, when OTA is cool clean out ashes with a pressure washer,DA.

This Thread is taking more time then it would take to
remove the corrector.
Be a man and take the corrector off.
The scope was put together, it can come apart.
Or, just crack the ota open like a piggy bank.

Exactly .... remove the corrector and get it out. As Rod says, if you're careful, mark the alignment and handle it with care, it should not be a problem.

And clean the inside of the corrector while you are at it

Since this thread is still going, I'd like to offer a new possible solution:

Cut the OTA into two pieces and convert it into a truss design. Not only will the paper towel fall out easily, but the tube will cool down significantly faster.

One time a small nut fell into my C-11. I used a 3/8" rubber hose (fuel line for cars) and attached to vacuum cleaner. I inserted the rubber hose from rear cell through the baffle tube and suck the nut. No problem using vacuum cleaner.

The quickest method is a lighted match, throw it in and when the paper is gone, cap the scope to extinguish the flames . . . . .

At first this thread had me yelling at the screen "take the corrector off!". Now I'm just chuckling at this whole "discussion"......I keep wondering WHEN are we going to see a picture of this famous towel in the C8?

I guess I've owned one of these for so long, that I thought they were common... A four claw pickup tool, would be the quickest. These are common at auto parts stores, or harbor freight for that matter. Often used for retrieving screws that one might accidentally drop into inaccessible places in your engine compartment or other.

good luck,
Dave
