I picked up a 60mm etx at Goodwill for $25. It worked just great until my dog knocked it over. No damage to the tube but it no loger would slew or track in Az. I sent it in to an imdependent telescope repair shop but made the mistake of not asking for a quote on repair cost. Now I have a $145 dollar find. It would have been cheaper to toss it and pick up another on Ebay for $40.

I have not found them to be that cheap. If you can find them at that price point you would be better off buying a couple for spares and attempt repairs on your own.

I ended up paying $135 for my ETX-60AT BB on eBay, so you're still in the ballpark after repair.

I wouldn't mind a few spares and something to make a how to videao with at $50. Too bad the the ETX80s are more like $150 or more everytime I look.

I was lucky and found a ETX80 for $60. Had a little dent in the tube but works perfectly. Fun scope and easy to use.

Sorry to hear about your scope's mishap ,25 bucks was a nice price! Last time i looked (2 year's ago) at wally world the selling price was around 218.00 online, A few years back wal mart was selling the etx 60 backpack edition for 40 bucks on clearance right after Christmas I got 1 as did many other CN'ers ! Wish they would repeat that sale again! It really is a fun grab n go scope and the goto's are spot on with a good two star alignment !

The ETX line is not easy to work on. The 60, 70 and 80 mounts are not even intended to be opened up. I've worked on a lot of them and at my standard labor rate $145 sounds reasonable, but I'd generally advise against repair as not being cost effective.

I would disagree as there is not that much to an ETX 60,70 and 80. The real reasons to not attempt repair is the lack of parts, and how ceap it is to replace the whole thing vs the time spent to repair. They are a real simple design. Check out weasner's site for more info, or http://www.cloudynights.com/item.php?item_id=2794.
