Avalon mount Align question (EQ6 HC, so anyone?)
      #5362951 - 08/11/12 07:48 AM

Hi,
so I had a first opportunity to test the mount last night but I failed to do any imaging ...
The issue is the alignment fails, it slews to the complete different location.
Here is what I do:
- position RA and dec on the index markers (telescope points to scp)
- power up mount
- give location: 4 E 51 N (I live in Belgium)
- date in: mm/dd/yyyy so I enter 08/10/2012
- timezone +1
- Time in 24H format 22H
- daylightsavings yes

Then I do 1 star alignment on Caph, instead of slewing to the east it goes west ...
I tried:
- set S instead of N, W instead of E
- manual, so release clutches and position telescope on Caph and align, but all goto's are off ...
- if I take dubhe same issue ...

I tried something just now and maybe it's a solution but need to wait till tonight,
instead of putting 22:00H I did put 10:00H now it seems to slew to caph (cannot confirm as it is day light), align, and slew to dubhe ...
it goes to the wright part of the sky, but need to confirm tonight.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
The controller is the same as on the EQ6 so I hope someone says aha I know what that is ...

Why is your scope pointing to SCP when you position RA and DEC on the index markers? If you live in the northern hemisphere, should it not point to NCP?

Typo it's NCP of course that would have been an easy fix :-)

Are you sure that you have entered the location correctly?

EDIT: What version did you get? The linear or the M-uno?

Ensure that you have entered the location and time correctly. Even the time, unless you are way off, should not really matter - the scope should at least point in the general direction, so I would imagine that it has to do with your location coordinates.

It is all correct entered ... I had someone else visit today and he had an eq6, nothing wrong with location, date and time ... Hope it stays clear to see if it's an issue with the 24H notation.

I did get the Linear, M-Uno seems less stable and although I wanted, polar alignment seems not that precise, which for a mobile setup is one of my primary concerns ... I want to start imaging after setup and not spend another 30 minutes on drift align.

I hope you post a review of this mount when you have a bit more time with it.

So entering 10 AM instead of the correct 22PM makes the one star align work and goto in that neighbourhood work ... bizar ...

Yves.
