The annual Perseid meteor shower is expected to peak tonight, August 11-12. It’s usually the best one of the year for northern hemisphere sky watchers, with an average of about one meteor visible per minute by a keen eyed observer. The worldwide maximum is expected around 13 hr UT (8 hr CDT) on August 12, however the ideal period for any location is between local midnight (midway between sunset and sunrise) and the beginning of morning twilight. Tonight during the wee hours of the morning a waning crescent Moon will rise, but it should not create much interference with meteor observation.
The meteor stream is a remnant of the comet Swift-Tuttle. Its radiant is in the constellation Perseus which will be in the northeastern sky. However the radiant is merely the point toward which meteor tails will be pointing. The meteors themselves can appear anywhere in the sky.
For my calendar of major meteor showers (including Moon info) through 2018, click: www.CurtRenz.com/asteroids
Observation reports would be welcome additions to this thread.

curt - It looks like poor conditions here Saturday to Early Sunday hours... Tomorrow evening seems to be looking mostly clear, how diminished will the rate seen per hour would you guess? If its 50 theoretically per hr tonight will it still be 10-20 per hr tomorrow night or will it be basically over?

Saw five or six last night while observing with my 12-inch Dob. I plan on heading out late tonight with a comfy chair and binoculars.

Between roughly August 9 & 14 the rate is not expected to be much less than at the peak.

My wife and I observed from 1:30 AM until 2:30AM from our back yard in NC and logged 44 Meteors. Probably could have gotten more, but high thin clouds obscured much of the sky.

Good for you, that's a pretty decent amount. We were totally clouded out in Gaston county and hope to see some here tonight as the sky looks pretty good now.

We are in Alexander County, NC and will be out again tonight. Conditions hopefully will be much better, allowing for more than one hour's worth of viewing.

Conditions here were clear and transparent (5/6). I logged 50 meteors between 2:00 & 3:30 AM local (0600-0730 UT). Only 3 were non-Perseids. I was cold (it was 51°F) so I went in for a while for some hot chocolate.
When I came back out, I logged 15 more between 4:10 & 5:10 local--all but one were Perseids. Things had really slowed down, the Moon was throwing out a lot of light for a crescent phase, and astronomical twilight was about to begin so I packed it in. Total for two and a half hours: 65 meteors, 61 of which were Perseids.
Most of the Perseids were yellowish in color and many left smoke trails. Even after moonrise, M31 and the Double Cluster were still naked eye objects. A very nice night under the stars.

I spent Sat night on Mt Pinos with at least 100 people. Conditions were iffy til about sunset with thunderstorms hovering over the mountain but cleared for the evening. At least temps were ideal, dropping from 100F to around 50F at the top during the 90 minute drive from my home.
I heard lots of ooh's and ahh's during the night. I caught about 5 fireballs and about a dozen good streakers.
There weren't that many scopes out as the parking lot was mainly strewn with lawn chairs, blankets, and sleeping bags.
There were still a couple dozen vehicles in the parking lot when I left at 6am.

I dident keep exact count, but I would say that from 9pm till 1pm( when I fell asleep) I saw about 60 meteors.
I think I saw more satiltes than I did metors.

I was able to catch 9 Perseids in about 30 minutes time (~4:10 to 4:40 a.m. EDT) from my red-zone front and back yards, during a brief clearing this morning. Four of them were fairly bright, about first magnitude or thereabouts.

Saw 56 from 1:15 to 3:00 EDT in our red/orange zone. Many left a nice smoke trail. A few non-Perseids were included in this total. Had the neighbors over, so we had a great time.

Saw 70 meteors in about 3 1/2 hours between 10pm and 2:30 AM (with some breaks in between) from my suburban location. This was a new perseid record for me.

Between my wife and I we saw 22 meteors from about 11:00pm through 12:00pm in orange skies. One was a real fireball - I'd say -8 or higher magnitude. At least one of the ones I saw wasn't a Perseid - it was going in the opposite direction.

I got a decent count of 20 very obvious, plus a couple of faint maybes. Many displayed color. Not just the usual yellow, but some greenish & a couple of blue. All of the brighter ones, approx. 12 left very obvious trains than lasted up to 1.5 seconds for the longest. All these tracks were definitely yellow. This was a pretty good rate actually considering that I live in a suburban orange zone with parts of my horizon obstructed. While they all seemed to come from the direction of Perseus, they were seen all over the sky. Several went right over my favorite area of the Milky Way-Sagitarius. This was my best Perseid shower in years! Of course, I missed seeing one of those green fireballs that outshine Venus & cast lurid shadows like I saw many years ago, up in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mts. That sparked a life long interest in Meteors & astronomy in general.

We pulled an all- nighter and bagged 184. Have seen much more prolific showers, but last night's had lots of nice ones with smoke trails.

In the couple days leading up to the peak, I saw only a few, even observing well after midnight on some very pleasant nights, weatherwise. The peak night was clouded out with rain in the Chicagoland area. No more seen; too bad.

I stayed up most of Saturday night and counted 120. I took hundreds of pictures but my lens fogged up and I only captured one decent meteor.

I'm hoping to see a few leftover Perseids tomorrow night when I go out to darker skies.
