So here is my first sketch of the sun. I'm starting black and white but later I'll experiment color. Compared to the practicing skteches I did using pictures, this sketch is a little boring because not much action on the sun and no particular details on the surface. Maybe the next coming days will give me some surprises to sketch. So this is my real first try at the eyepiece. Andre. Before going too far with the surface texture, my goal is to render the proms and surface details such as filament, sun spots, flares and white active areas. As for the granulation of the surface, its not from me. As I mentionned earlier in the other post while practicing, I modified a real picture of the surface and I'm using it as a model for all my future sketches. It's only a simple photocopy of the same model using different FOV and magnification. So I don't loose any precious time drawing the granulation which is almost always the same and I can concentrate on the rest moving rapidly. This way that give a nicer real look to the sketch. But if you look carefuly, I draw myself the chromosphere which change in thickness from one place to the other on the sun and depending of the magnification used. This morning the chromosphere was very thin between the two active areas, have a look. Thanks for your comments. Andre. It is really a marvel of ingenuity to work out how to achieve the effects you want. I also admire your practice sketches. Copying from a photo is an underestimated learning tool. No time constraits from a quickly changing solarscape. No material restrictions as it is all about experimentation. As far as granulation goes, your reasoning is sound about leaving it. You may look to concentrate on the unique patterns that appear, and then finish developing those deatils at your desk, where you can add the granulation - says a man who has never even seen through an H alpha scope, . The sketch doesn't need to be absolutely completed at the eyepeice. Congratulations again on your first solar sketch! The first of many I hope. Alex. I can do the main features where they are and add the granulation later. I may try this in the future. For now I'll just enjoy sketching and get more skill to be prepare for the very rapid flares to come. Andre. It's exactly like you can see on the sketch. It's a real reproduction in size and FOV of what I see. That explain why I have to sketch quickly because at this magnification, the proms are moving fast. I'm eager to see the sun back to present you more sketches. Next thursday looks promising. Andre. I can seldom take my PST above 90x--I'm envious. Rendering the appearance of the solar surface in H-alpha is a real challenge--so far, I haven't found anyway that I'm truly satisfied with.
