Verify asteroid identity???
      #5370452 - 08/15/12 05:35 PM Attachment (84 downloads)

Ok, so the other night during a 1 1/2 hour imaging run on Stephan's Quintet there was this asteroid just moving past ngc7320. I didn't notice it till I was watching the frames stack in Neb3, and sigma clip didn't quite eliminate it in the stacked image. There's a faint trail in the stacked image and I made a cropped animation with the 18 individual 5 minute exposures.

Soooo, is there an 'easy' way to verify it's identity?

My Autostarsuite planetarium program showed Bopp (7086) in the vicinity (not exactly in the right place but on the same trajectory with no other candidates even remotely close). I thinking the descrepancy is probably due to my ephemerides being way out of date.

The time period for the animation is 2:30 to 4:00 AM EST (my local dst) on the morning of August 13 2012 (give or take a couple minutes either way). Now I know 'real' astrometry involves precise timing and universal standards for time, date, etc. and 'someday' I may actually learn how to do all that but for now I'm wondering if anyone else can confirm this is Bopp (7086).

Here's the full image with the faint trail and a link to the animation on Astrobin...

Mike, I can't verify the asteroid, but can complement you on these images you are producing with your new camera. Excellent work & I really like the cool animation + your NGC 7331. I haven't been able to image at the times you are in over three years. I take what I can get though! Nice work & CS!

Thanks Graham. It took half the night with Photoshop Imageready to figure out how to do that animation. It's the first one I've ever attempted.

Yes I'm pretty happy with the ST-402 so far. Only gripe I have is it's so humid here that the ccd window fogs below 10c. It's the outer window so changing dessicant isn't gonna help.
