I'm having one of "those" weekend new
      #5374913 - 08/18/12 04:07 PM Attachment (25 downloads)

So I wasn't able to make it down to Goldendale due to "technical difficulties" with a vehicle. pretty good source of disappointment there! So I set up two imaging systems at home. I solved an issue with my QHY8 that turned out to be a low voltage situation. Got both systems going...

I captured images with my AT6RC and my AT65EDQ using both QHY9 and QHY8 respectively.

with the AT65, I got the trifid in 5 minute subs(in the right place at the right time). then moved north in the milky way and got 20 X 5 minutes of a random location. then moved to M45 when it was high enough...

With the AT6RC I shot an hours worth of the Iris Neb, then after two Nebulosity freeze's and restarting Nebulosity moved to M33 and shot 20 X 10 minutes...

So I was pretty tired, after getting some darks, Shut everything down, brought the laptops inside and figured I would process today. First I wanted to see how I fared with the Iris. About as I expected a little noisy but not disapointing. processed M33, and it was a little tougher. As I got to the end of processing it became clear that I hadn't re-initiated the dithering between Neb and PHD. OK not horrible but..

Now I move on to the other laptop that had the QHY8 data...No Boot, no hard drive detected. An INTEL SSD storage device less than I year old. Deader than a flat rabbit on highway 9. All data from the QHY8 and AT65Q "gone"

So anyway hear is my M33 through the AT6RC "WITH" the TRF2008 focal reducer/flattener.

17 of the 20 X 10 minute sub exposures
QHY9C @ -20 C
Atlas EQ-G EQMOD
Guided with a mini-guider and meade DSI V1
I'm will have to reprocess this one because I did expect more out of it for 170 minutes.

And an hour of the IRIS.
6 X 10 minutes "with dithering activated"

That suks about the hard drive. I hate it when that happens. I'm somewhat protected with my astro data cuz I capture and process on two different desktops.

The images you got look good. I'd hit both with HLVG (especially M33) but that's just me.

Never trust solid state HD! Is there a way to use jumper to transfer the info? like doing a clone?

Thanks Mike

No chance for recovery, Jose. I removed it and connected it to another computer with a USB drive connector. Does not detect. As it was no longer "seen" by the bios in the original laptop I had it in. I've had other SSD drives and never had experienced a fail. I have had conventional drives fail, even received new that were bad.

don't trust any drives much...

I don't think SSHDs are any more vulnerable than conventional drives (at least not in my non-trivial experience...I have purchased about 30 this year alone for mobile systems on a project I run). That said...there is really only one more word to say....backup.

Sorry to hear about the problem...losing the data is only the first punch to the gut. Then it's followed by an uppercut when you spend a day or two fixing the hardware and re-installing and configuring the system to get it the way you want it. Sorry!

I know that using regulat HD don't fail at all at least you can open it and remove the true disk and transplant it on a similar working unit.
Now, in those SSHD it has to be a way to bypass the problem, like removing the chips and replace them in a temporary board or something, this is just a general idea, I don't truly know the problem there. For me, to classify it as a loss it has to be a physical memory corrupted, not the circuit sound them. Meaning the data is locked is locked inside.

Sorry to hear about the difficulty Robert - glad to see it wasn't a total loss.

Thanks Jim
I'm still working on reprocessing the M33 shot.
