Nice place you got here! Been reading a lot and finally pulled the trigger today on an XT8i! (Thanks Jim for your awesome post I found in the beginner threads!)

My daughter and I can't wait. UPS shows a delivery date of 8/22.

Welcome to Cloudy Nights and congrats on the new scope, Greg! I've had mine for over three years and still get as much joy out of it as when I first received it.

I agree, Jim's dissertation is a great read for those thinking about purchasing a scope.

Cheers...Eric

that should be a great scope for you! I have found my 10" scope to less forgiving than my 8" scope was in the collimation department and generally feel like my planetary views were better with the 8" scope but can't say exactly why. 8" intelliscope is a great choice!

(I'm biased, but) GREAT choice - you're going to love it!! Even though I have acces to larger scopes, my xt8i gets used all the time. Have fun and let us know how your first light goes!

Definately a great way to start.....we love ours I just wish these storms would pass here(been 3 months andhad maybe 3 to 5 nights of viewing) but when we do get out it is just a wonderful scope!

If you experience any problems with the intelliscope features just post on cn and someone can probably help.I had a few small problems I found easy fixes for.

I may be ( just remotely possible! LOL) somewhat biased here, but, GREAT CHOICE!
However, my 8XTi is actually my fifth scope. I am not a newbie, but I get lots of milage out of this simple 8 inch reflector. Check out the DSO foruum sometime, I usually post my (better) DSO hunts there. Not bragging on me, but the Dob rocks! (So does S & T's Pocket Sky Atlas.)

Clear Skies,
Matt

Thanks all! CN is such a great resource. As I mentioned Jim's post was very helpful to me in my decision. I was really considering a 10" but found much information similar to what thetortoise said here. So I resisted (with much difficulty) the aperture battle and went with what I feel will be an enjoyable scope in stock form as well as one I can add accessories to for even more enjoyment.

Awesome choice... That will be a lot of fun. The intelliscope is a great system. Hope you have some clear skies.

Welcome, congrats, and all the best with the new scope. It's been awhile since I posted that dialogue, and know what? I still think that the XT8i is the all-around best beginner's instrument out there.

Regards,

Jim

That's my first scope as well which I only purchased a few months back. You're going to love it.

When it arrives, take your time putting the base together and be sure you do a complete inventory of all your parts.

Lastly, while you're waiting, view the videos on Orion's website that detail the base assembly -- they are very helpful both ahead of time and during the assembly process. You can also download the PDF manuals ahead of time as well.

Good luck.
-Dan

Well, tomorrow is the day the XT8i arrives. Wouldn't you know it? Skies are supposed to be clear tonight but cloudy tomorrow! Let the curse begin! LOL.
