Hi Doug,
Thanks for beating me to the clarification.
Bottom line is that there are very few truly rare eyepieces.
With patience (and some timely help from my friends on Cloudy Nights) I've been able to purchase pretty much anything I've been looking for on the used market.
Cheers! Blake

I have just bought a 21mm Ethos, and now thanks to this thread, wondering do I also need a 31 Nagler to really max out the tfov

Well, the 31mm Nagler would give you a fov that is 17 arc minutes wider than your 21mm Ethos if you don't use a Paracorr, and 15 arc minutes wider if you do use a Paracorr. That's a lot of money for not a whole lot more fov, but I would probably do it if it were me. Then again, I was always pretty good at spending other people's money.

IIRC, I think I read somewhere the 30mm ES 82° has a 43mm dia field stop? If true, the tfov would be very slightly larger than that of the 31 Nagler and at the current price, an absolute steal. There's no way I could spring for the Nagler after breaking the bank for the Ethos but the ES is very tempting I must say

I have 40.6mm for the field stop on the ES, 42mm on the Nagler. Weight-wise, the difference is: ES 30--1000g Nagler 31--1000g Eye relief is: ES 30--21mm Nagler 31--19mm
As to whether you need a 31 Nagler if you have a 21 Ethos, remember the field stop of the Nagler is 42/36.2 or 16% wider and has a magnification factor 21/31 or 32.3% lower. For the largest star clusters and nebulae, the lower magnification, increase in exit pupil, and wider field, makes it worth it. In my 12.5", the appearance of the Veil with an O-III filter on the 31 Nagler is just short of "the singing of angels".

Thanks for the clarification re the field stops Don, they are pretty much evenly matched in that criteria it seems. Now though, which to go for? The new kid on the block at less than half the price, or the tried & tested benchmark, the Terminagler

Your current stable of eyepieces cries "Terminagler". Besides this is a 31T5 thread!
