Here is an observation of Messier 16. When observed with binoculars, M16 is associated with a subtle background glow. With a couple of UHC-filters, this nebula becomes more substantial.
Site : Bisschofshofen, Austria Date : July 18, 2012 Time : around 22.30UT Binoculars : Teleskop Service 90° 70mm binoculars Magnification : 21.6x FOV: 3.2° Filters : UHC Seeing : 4/5 Transp. : 5/5 Sky brightness : 20.9 magnitudes per square arc second near zenith (SQM reading). Nelm: 6,1 Sketch Orientation: N up, W right. Digital sketch made with Corel Paint Shop Pro X2, based on a raw pencil sketch.

Rony,
This is very impressive. The nebulosity here does not improve with increase in magnification in my experience. This view, if I were at the eyepieces, would be about as good as it gets.
