Lodestar question... new
      #5377908 - 08/20/12 04:19 PM

Can the Lodestar be used stand alone or does it require a PC at all times? Curious because it has the ST-4 connector which almost implies stand alone capability. Just wondering.

Nope, it needs a computer.....There are lots of guide cameras that have ST-4 connectors that still need PC control.

That's what I thought. So with the Lodestar guiding a CGE PRO mount, the set up would be Lodestar UBS to PC for guide setup, guide software & imaging and Lodestar st-4 cable to st-4 plug on mount to control motors. Would this setup be true for different software, like PHD? Sorry, I don't have any hands on with this stuff. I'm retiring a ST-4 and should have a Lodestar in the next few days.

Yes.

Thanks - I see another thread that addresses my questions.

The configuration you speak of is pretty standard. I have used it myself. A couple of things to look for, though.

First--the guider cable arrangement on the Lodestar appears weak, and from my experience is in fact flaky. (It broke on third use.) I made up a work around. http://alexastro.com/Alex%20Home%20Page/Equipment/Lodestar%20Adapter.pdf

Second--CCD cameras have their own "St-4" outputs. (DSLR's do not.) I find my QSI ports and relay to be a bit better. So, my configuration is Lodstar--USB to computer--Computer via USB to QSI imaging camera--out back of QSI on ST-4 cable to mount. I use this on three different types of mounts. You can also use a direct to computer (through serial usually). It depends on your software.

Third--the ST-4- "standard" is not particularly "standard." I assume it will work in your mount like it does in mine. But try it.

Finally--PHD will work fine. And I have used it in just the confifuration you have described.
