There was another post asking about these recently, but I have one and I love it. It's not my only EP, nor would I suggest it replaces others, but there have been nights it's the only one I've used. The quality is excellent and it's amazingly convenient.

If you Googled it you wouldn't be able to escape this

and aka Ibase here. Not only that, but the inestimable JRBarnett has said of these that they're surprisingly good. Had we not insisted on LP WF EPs we probably mita gone with these (tho merging still mita been a problem.) If yer ok with the limited AFOV at lower mags, then buy with confidence.

I've had the Baader 8-24mm MkIII Zoom for a couple years now and it is one beautiful eyepiece! It can "almost" take the place of many eyepieces, its -that- good! It comes with 1.25in and 2.0in nose piece adapters. I use it mostly with the 1.25in nose piece, mostly because I like 1.25in ep's over two inch.
You can also get other adapters to do AP with it alone in a DSLR or in-line with a scope to.
Perhaps another poster can jump in here on using it with a scope and the adapters needed; at least two I think.

It is a great eyepiece and very popular among Solar viewers. It is also a module system with lots of flexibility, as seen here with the Hyperion 2.25x barlow.

Here is the Hyperion zoom with barlow on my TV Genesis, attached to a Lunt herschel wedge, very sharp and contrasty.

Hey Joe, I guess I have a mildly dissenting vote. It was one of the first EP's I bought when I didn't think I was going to have a lot of EP's. As a zoom it met my expectations, mostly. I found it annoying that the AFOV, and the focus changed with FL; mostly the focus was annoying. I rarely use it, and only really to check if its as I remembered it. If it is one of a few EP's you have, then it's ok. But given many alternatives to choose from, I never choose it.

hmm, MRNUTTY, how old is your EP, is it the latest MKIII? I've read literally over 50+ reviews on it and not a one gave a bad review... i wonder though, quite a few mention the AFOV at lower mag and the fact that it's not completely par-focal but generally speaking.. rave reviews

I have never found a problem with focusing, but it does have a narrow field of view at lower powers, but I usually use high power and with the barlow, that's 3.5mm and it is very good. The barlow is a real sleeper, never heard of it, till a post in this forum. I really like the size as I was using a 2.5x Powermate and that thing is really long. The only problem I have found with the barlow is the in focus, is really tight. I have to use a recessed 1/4 adaptor to reach focus and others have made adaptors to reach focus.

Have you tried using it with the 1.25/T-2 clicklock? Attach the barlow to the click lock, slide the EP into the clicklock, the barlow will sit deeper in the diagonal.

I've been using a Baader Mark II Zoom for several years now. It's in the focuser of my 10" Dob at least 80% of the time when I'm at my dark site. I also put it in my 90mm Mak for grab-n-go views of the Moon.
The Baader Zoom has helped me find and observe over 800 DSO. The ability to dial in the focal length allows me to select the optimum magnification, image scale and perceived contrast. This is very helpful in observing dim galaxies. I only switch to other eyepieces for a wider view or to see if a simple glass eyepiece will pull in an object toward the limiting magnitude of my scope.
I've never had a problem with focusing the Baader Zoom or dialing the focal length setting. Between 24mm and 8mm, I only need a slight tweak of the focuser, if that.
Incidentally, the Baader Zoom in 2" mode will work in a Paracorr Type 1 at setting 1.

Thanks for the good information on the Baader zoom. Does anyone know the difference between the MkI, MkII, and MkIII versions of this zoom?
Are they all essentially the same but just manufactured in different runs? Or were improvements applied and do the improvements actually make a difference?

Drift timing measurements of FOV 24mm = Afov 42° 20mm = Afov 49° 16mm = Afov 52° 12mm = Afov 58° 8mm = Afov 70°
At the 24mm setting the Hyperion zoom has exactly the same field of view as a 25mm volcano top UO ortho.
At the 20mm setting the zoom has near exactly the same fov as a 20mm TV plossl.
At the 12mm setting the fov is near exactly the same as a 12mm Astrotech Paradigm.
(near exactly in both cases is less than 1% difference).
The Meade 5K 24mm fov is more than 50% wider than the Hyperion zoom set at 24mm.
One major complaint I have about the MarkIII zoom. In very cold weather, the zoom dial froze up. Could not be turned at all.
Also be aware of the changing eye relief shown here is total er minus the lens recess = net usable eye relief at 8mm 16.7-4 = 12.7mm at 12mm 13.7-4 = 9.7 at 16mm 12.3-4 = 8.3 at 20mm 14.3-4 = 10.3 at 24mm 16.9-4 = 12.9
eye relief at 16mm setting is almost unusable if you wear eyeglasses

Needed eye relief can vary widely among individuals. I can keep my glasses on and view comfortably - seeing the entire FOV - through the Baader Zoom Mark II at all settings. I don't know if the eye relief is different in the Mark II than in the Mark III.
