first attempt at sketching new
      #5368219 - 08/14/12 12:13 PM Attachment (54 downloads)

Hi all,
I'm looking for help and suggestions from the talented posters in this forum. I hav'nt drawn anything at the eyepiece for 25 years or so.I've seen so many intriguing and well done drawings here that I thought, why not try.I'd like to try to reach realistic representations of what I see.Any and all critique is welcome and valued.Last night I tried to draw M22 as seen through my 1529 from moderate skies.I'm hopeing to certainly get much better.

Hello mdowns, fine first attempt at an astro sketch. I notice a little colour there too, or could it just be an artefact of the scanning/photo of the sketch?

I happy that you've been inspired to return to sketching after a long absence. I'm sure your pencils and paper are itching for some more action.

Alex.

Alex,
I tend to see yellows and reds when others dont.I really dont know why or even if thier accurate but I purposefully include them.

Good, just making sure I was seeing things correctly on the monitor. If you see it then lay it down. Colour perception is a very subjective thing, particularly at the low light levels we deal with. I'm glad you did too as it shows to me you are also confident and comfortable with a pencil.

Now, let's see more...

From what I see of your first attempt, you're off for a great start!

JeanB,
Thanks for the link to your gallery.Great images all.Can I ask, what format are you using for the lunar drawings? Same question for the moon, jupiter and tower picture (I really like that one). Your drawings of Jupiter seem very realistic. Are you using pastels, chalk or a mix of things?

Hello,

thanks for your comment on my gallery!

I normally use pastels (Conte crayons, Rembrant pastel chalks) on black pastel paper. For Jupiter I use a plastic oval template (stencil). I always have to do a little bit of processing with Photoshop or GIMP (freeware) to enhance the contrasts and luminosity after scanning the original. As for the moon, white pastels are used, but I also use charcoal crayon for the shadows which give great contrasts.

Regards

Jean

Hi.

Your first sketch is looking very nice. The only suggestion I would make is just don't press too much on the pencil to make it less contrasted. Make it a bit more fuzzy and diffuse and you'll be okay. That's my opinion if I compare it to more experienced sketchers. After looking at several DSO objects in my C14, they don't look that contrasted. Otherwise your sketch is beautiful.

Bravo.

Andre.

Mdowns, I really like your sketch. You have portrayed the luminosity quite well, which is something I have trouble with myself.

The subject of contrast is a difficult one. I tend to heighten the contrast on DSOs, because I want something more definite on paper than the vague faint fuzzies I see in the eyepiece. These are your drawings, you get to decide!

Thank you Andre and Perfessor,
Interesting comments about the contrast levels.I did actually raise contrast levels as compared to the actual image at the scope. It was not intended but rather happened when I added the border and text.Knowing that this happens will incline me to decrease the actual levels in my next drawing to compensate.Truth be told though,I kinda like the better contrast.

Very good first attempt. Try all different types of media until you find one you want to stay with for a while. Then try another and compare. Just be sure to practice and keep going. Push yourself.

Great first sketch! I like the high contrast in your image. I like that you added the color. I see color in stars in most clusters reds, blues, white, and others. I haven't added color in my images yet, but after seeing yours it really adds to the realism. I may try it. I usually just grab one pencil and blender and I'm off, but I will give color a shot.

Mdowns

That's your choice. So keep it like this as most peoples prefer more contrast and it's okay for me.

Andre.

Depends on the object but sometimes finger or paper blending stump. Sold at Hobby Lobby. Sure there are many other places to get these. You can use an eraser too. Sometimes I mark a dark spot on a corner of the paper and use that to pick up the lead or graphite to lay down a fuzzy haze then add foreground stars on top.

Really I just practice to see what it will look like.
I am pretty new at this too.
