I was browsing Astromart and noticed that Lunt Engineering seems to be now importing three ED refractors, a 70mm F/6 ($399), an 80mm F/7 ($449) and the 102mm F/7 ($729.)
Nominally, these look like the typical Asian FPL-51/FK-61 ED doublets at very good prices. The 102 mm appears to be essentially the same scope as the AT-102ED, Orion "Premium" 102ED and the SV-102ED. The 102ED photo shows a thumbscrew to keep the dewshield from sliding down, a common problem with these scopes.

These look like a ray of sunshine for those who have mourned the death of the affordable ED doublets.

Especially since Lunt has proven themselves to be a quality company, it's good to have more choices out there!

When other Lunt dealers update their websites I'm sure you'll be able to buy it elsewhere, hopefully.

thanks jon
great news indeed. i was looking to replace my ES 80mm with a 102mm scope but was left with no alternative since ES has replaced their triplet by a carbon scope which will probably be more expensive needlessly.
this scope is in fact great news for many of us.

Too bad they stopped there. At those prices, a 5" ed doublet for $1000-1150 would be great. And/or a 6" for $1800-2000. But, a 4"ed doublet for $750 is a great deal.

Why wouldn't you just buy from anacortes? The only reason i don't buy from them very often is that i am local.

They are talking white light and CaK. I wonder if that means they have a tailored color correction for blue. The results could be interesting all around if they do.

I've been thinking about a 72mm for a while and Astronomics seems like the best deal around. So, why would I buy a Lunt 70mm for more money, a single focuser and no metal case? Is it something to do with solar viewing?

I wouldn't argue that the AT72 isn't a better deal. Free shipping plus a hard case, plus we get to purchase from our sponsor.
This Lunt 72mm does appear to have a 2 speed focuser, though.

Last weekend we're able to use a 230mm F/7 Lunt Solar LS230T/PT refractor, it's by far the world’s largest production Solar telescope. Amazing views of our Sun

The Lunt 70mm doesn't look like the good deal the other two are, maybe it's a misprint because it's only $50 less than the 80mm. I don't know what scopes you currently own but I find 70mm is not enough, 80mm is enough. A couple other points:
- They all have two speed focusers.
- The 70mm has a soft case. I like soft cases more than hard cases... You might not.
I am not buying one, I've got a good 80mm and a good 101mm. But for someone looking for an affordable ED refractor, the 80mm and 102mm look like the best deals around.

Anything more on these? I cannot find anything but the basic information...are they available now? Does anyone have one he or she can comment on? I would like a nice 80mm ed for my C=14 actually for a finder.

Lunt is supposed to be at ASAE next month. I'll have to see what they have on display in this area.

Have you had a chance to use the 102 yet? Looks like a lot of scope for the money.

Hi Francois Have you finally received your Lunt Doublet? I am considering a similar purchase (either the 70mm or 80mm) for a trip in December.
