Nexstar 8SE HC & MC firmware update

My six year old 8SE has hand control and motor control versions 4.12 and 5.12, respectively. I understand that the current versions are 4.21 and 5.14, respectively. (These are for HC versions 4.xx, NOT Nexstar +.)
I also understand the only change in the MC version going from 5.12 to 5.14 is correction of a cordwrap bug.
Does anyone know, if I replace my current v4.12 hand controller with a new one containing v4.21, is it necessary to upgrade the MC version to 5.14? Or will MC v5.12 still continue to work OK, even with the new HC version? (I would be able to use the most recent HC version without flash upgrading.)

Tony,
First of all if you want to you can upgrade your current HC to v4.21, you don't need a new HC.
You can however also buy a NexStar+ HC if you want the new key layout and future capabilities (but there are no functional differences yet).
You can indeed continue to run MC v5.12 with any of the HC firmware levels.
