Crater Palitzsch
      #5399113 - 09/02/12 04:33 AM Attachment (50 downloads)

I autumn you can observe the waning monn in the evening ky. Yestrday night I observed the crater Palitzsch (very near Petavius which can be seen as outline). I used my 12 inch Newtonian at 192x.
BTW: The astronomer Johann Georg Palitzsch was Saxonian like me:

Uwe,

It looks great and you captured some fine detail across the floor. I am so used to seeing it in shadow, it is very nice to it well illuminated. Great job Uwe.

Frank

At the waning moon, everything was *bright*, not much shades of grey in the crater. I tries to preserve this in my sketch.

I was observing this very area the last two nights. It is interesting that as your sketch indicates there is a crack in the W wall of Palizsch that seems parallel to the main rille in Petavius itself. There is another one like that in the nearby Snellius. I wonder what was going on there to generate such seemingly parallel cracks.

It was interesting to read the page about Palitzsch that you linked. Not just a farmer who all of a sudden beat Messier&Co to recover Comet Halley, as he might appear if one reads some books that just mention him in passing. Further following the links from that page it is curious to see that apparently his large house is still standing and is a museum. Funny thing just from the name I'd always assumed he was a Prussian. But the house is indeed in Dresden - Saxony, just like you said.

I dont believe in a crack. It may be that Palitzsch consists of two eroded craters and we see here the end of the first one.
