I did a lot of this in my early sketching until I was comfortable not using a grid. Sketching the whole disk is certainly not an easy task. When I try that I nearly always end up with lack of space to draw the final craters or features and have to erase and try again. Never thought of using graph paper. As for the graphed drawing, it was small (less than 7cm diameter), proportion is easier when smaller. The larger one was on charcoal paper and I'm happier with it. (I changed the size of last nights drawing.jpg, so it would be visible.)
