2012 QG42, relatively large asteroid, just discovered on August 28th, will fly past the Earth-Moon system on Sept 14th only 2.8 million km (7.4 lunar distances) away.

We caught it last night just as we were getting ready to close up shop for the night. This is four 5-minute unguided exposures, CDK17 w/Apogee U16M. The galaxy in the field is 14.8 magnitude PGC 69531.
Going to try and get it again tonight with more shorter, guided shots.

I actually captured it Saturday night with my 80mmf/11 refractor and a lodestar guider as camera.

I tried this object last night but I had troble finding it. I'm not sure if orbital elements for this asteroid are stable enough, it's very close to Earth and its orbit could change easily because of the Earth's gravity.
In the end, I did several shots (30 sg. exposure) with a DSLR over the area it was supposed to be.
Careful inspection of some images revealed it as a really dim trail on the sky, several arcminutes from its predicted position. This object is movig really fast right now.
The pictures I made are not very good because I have lots of LP and the asteroid is too dim. Anyway, an animation follows.

We loaded the daily astorb.dat from Lowell into TheSkyX Pro and it was dead on in the center of the field.

I tried the Minor Planet & Comet Ephemerids Service:

... with near perfect results. Somehing odd happens with the orbital elements/software I was working with. This service from MPC is good enough for me.
