Observation of our star: sept 2 and 3

Hi everyone,

I had some time last Sunday and Monday to observe our sun both in white light and H alpha. The sun put up a great show during these two days. Many proeminences and sunspots could be observed during hours.

On sept 2 I started my observation session at approx 13:00 with my LuntLS60. Even though I concentrated on proeminence for my sketch, I noticed two bright white flares on the disk (I think AR1560 was the origin)which appeared at approx 14:00 and lasted for nearly an hour until they faded away. On my sketch you can see these flares on the upper center of the disk.

My sketch in H alpha was done with acrylic paint. This was a lot of fun but also a lot of work and I am not sure I will stick with this technique even though it gives a nice bright image.

I take it you did the painting at the eyepiece? I've attempted lunar watercolor at the eyepiece and it was a flop! Love the brightness of the Sun in the painting. It looks very realistic that way (and the color is the hardest thing to get right!). Congrats on such a fantastic set of sketches and paintings!

Not entirely Erika. I first used a HB pencil to draw the disk and all the details of the proeminences and major features on the disk. The paint was added as layers on the pencil sketch. I went back to the eyepiece with a small brush to adjust some details.

Frank, considering that Lunt solarsope were back-order for nearly 3 months in Montreal, I would say that some Montrealers jumped into this hobby.

Again I would say that acrylic paint is a nice media to use as for the end result. However, it is hardly practical directly at the eyepiece. The surface texture of the sun is hard to reproduce on a sketch (Roel and André acheived outstanding results). I wanted to have something as close as possible as the view I had with H alpha. I guess next time I could prepare my sketch by painting in advance the solar disk with acrylic and sketch the details with ink pen or other color crayons while at the eyepiece.

My sketch of the whole solar disk with the sunspots was done at 36X and 90X to grab some details.
