Another thing I discovered today is that my frame rate was about 10 times higher than recommnended for planetary work. Apparently that introduces all kinds of artifacts and pixelation, which is pretty evident here. Also, the barlow will be essential. I'll just move the camera up to the top of the scope and use the built-in barlow next time. Unfortunatley the weather is supposed to be junky for the next 4 days.

I guess it's warts and all today...some days things work and some days I read the directions.

Maybe I'll be back on here in a few months after I work out the kinks and study up on this. Thanks everybody for bearing with me, I really appreciate it!

Hi Terry,

Are you taking all your shots through your "observatory" window? Unless you are homebound, you would do much better to get as far away from these large buildings as possible. Otherwise, you must contend with thermal currents between your room and the outside and the currents generated by the outside of the building as it tries to come to thermal equilibrium with the air. For many years I used a 7x50 binocular through a glass window but found that even a 40x spotting scope suffered when viewing through an open window.

Hey Les, how you doing? No, I'm not homebound...more like city bound. The traffic around here is a nightmare and I'm shooting out my window more for convenience. I typically turn off the a.c. for awhile beforehand and leave the window open to equalize it a bit. It does help. The only opportunity I have to get away is on the weekends, but the places to set up are limited unless I want to take a 2 hour drive out to the mountains. Which I may do. Right now I kind of like the challenge of seeing what I can pull out of a less than ideal situation. I don't notice the thermal currents that much unless I'm taking pictures of the sun after about 1030 or so. Then it really starts to jump around. I'll be moving in about 9 months to those very same mountains (WV area)I hope.

I've also discovered that I haven't been doing some key steps in Registax. So, that has made a significant difference as well (at least to my eyes).

Here's another shot of that Jupiter photo above. I ran it through Registax again and was able to pull just a hair more definition, although it looks a little dark to me. But, then again, I didn't have much to work with.

I can't squeeze any more out of the shots (above). I think I hit the wall on this one.

Well, at least you are getting good practice until you can observe under more favorable conditions.

Thanks Les. I'll keep at it. I like the challenge. Here's one I took of the sun this morning between blankets of clouds. Definitely not good seeing conditions today.

Les, this is what I'm dealing with today, weather-wise. Clouds with a high chance of more clouds. I just picked up a Sony Nex 5-N and I'm really chomping at the bit to be able to hook it up to the scope. Jim Reichart is ordering the correct adapter, so hopefully I'll get to test it out soon. 16 megapixels is pretty amazing. The last camera I had was 3 megapixels, so this will be a quite a step up.

The camera settings must be way off because I wasn't able to capture any moons. They were clearly there too.

Sometimes a tabletop works in a pinch...allows me to get a little bit better angle on things. If it gets too cloudy, I just sit there and stare at it. Because, frankly, it does look good.
