New SN 2012ei in NGC 5611 in Bootes Type Ia new
      #5395906 - 08/31/12 12:12 AM

We have a new SN in Bootes if anyone can still grab a view of it in NGC 5611. You'll have to do it in the early evening but it has gone from 14.7 mag to around 13.6 since August 22nd.

Here is the report from Latest SN

Thanks for the heads up. I'll have a look as soon as this fog goes away...we're heading into 3rd quarter, so the moon should not be a problem in early eve.

I am looking forward to seeing this one. Since I prefer to have a decent view of the galaxy at the same time, I am waiting till the Moon is gone from the evening sky.

Thanks. It won't be easy to see with my 8" newt, but I think I'll try it anyway

Here's my pic of SN2012ei in late twilight tonight @ ~m13.5 and should be visible on medium sized scopes

I was out yesterday evening with my C8, trying to catch the SN, but the Moon made it impossible. I swear, it was so bright, it was almost daylight! I could read Uranometria without using my red flashlight. I'll need to wait a couple of days, to get the Moon away from the evening sky. Late next week looks promising.

Clear skies!

Thanks for those images--made identification pretty easy tonight in my 18. It was a bit tough getting started in the evening twilight (about 9 pm)--I had to get out binoculars to find rho bootis to kick off my star hop. But once I had that in the scope, it was a straightforward hop. I picked up the galaxy--or a definite hint of it--in my 20T5, and then went to the 10XW. If I had not been able to see the galaxy clearly, no way would I have identified the SN. But the galaxy showed well in the 10, and even better in the 7, much as in your images. Elongated about 3:1 WSW with the SN a pinprick on the east end. Very satisfying. The moon was well up in the east by the time I finished the observation; for a challenge, I took on the nearby mag 13.5 ngc 5623 (40' ENE of 5611); it was visible, but just barely at this point, so it was time to come in after a brief session.

Thanks again to Jay for bringing this one up, and Nytecam and Rich for their images. Very helpful of you guys!

-geo

Nice image. I did a quick photometry on it and I got m13.6.

The SN should be observable with my 8" but there are high trees on the West side of my backyard that block the SN view

Good observation. Unfortunetly the AAVSO dosen't have a set of comparsion stars for this SN.

Looked at this one last night with 20" Starmaster in not so dark skies and dubbed it "the winking supernova." With direct vision both the galaxy and the supernova faded badly, averted vision enabled me to see it. Hope to get to a dark sky site for a better look at this one before it is too low in the evening sky.

Good to hear from you Kim.

It was definitely tough in the twilight from suburbia--I was using AV as well. But I take that for granted most of the time--I mean, I often don't notice that I'm using AV.

Type Ia supernovae are very luminous and this one is no exception. At about 80 Mly, the exploded star's luminosity is similar to that of its entire host galaxy !!

One of such events at a mere 5 kly from us (similar to the distance of the Crab Nebula M1) would result in a -7.5 magnitude star in our heavens. I guess it would be bright enough to be seen in full daylight.

Still waiting for a chance to drive to a dark site to see this supernova

Grabbed a look on the night of Sept 4 in that short window of time between twilight and Moonrise. Really boring starfield. Here's the sketch I did using my f/3.3 20" at 275X.

Wow, Bill, excellent observation. I am glad to see from your expert sketch that visually this lenticular extends to form the background for the SN, if only just. And that the nucleus/compact core is visible. It is unexpected to me though from the photographs that visually the galaxy should appear so thin. Photographically (NED data) its major to minor axis ratio is practically 2:1. Hopefully in a few days I'll see it all for myself.

Has anyone seen this with an 8" scope? I had a go at this last night with my C8. It was pretty easy to find the correct area to look NW of Rho Boo. Once I found the two 9.5 Mag stars that brace it with my 40mm Plossl, I started upping the magnification. 100X, 127X, 163X and 222X.

I didn't see any hint of the galaxy at 50X with the 40mm, but at 100X with averted vision, it seemed like there was something there. It was about the same at 127X. At 163X, I could see the galaxy with averted vision, but it was VERY dim and came and went. Once is a while, I could see the brighter core fairly well.(I'm using this word "brighter" loosely as this galaxy and bright are not two terms that belong in the same sentence! ) At 222X, I couldn't see anything.

I kept at this object for about an hour and a quarter. Several times, for just an instant, I thought I could see it as a very faint, dim "double". The core was not sharp, but the other component was. The other component I thought I saw, was to the SE of the core if what I saw was real and not just a hallucination from looking at nothing for so long.

What I think I saw was at the very edge of my ability to see with this scope, so I'd like your opinion. Did I bag this one? Is it even possible with a C8 on a night of decent, but not perfect seeing? Transparency was really good, seeing was a little better than average, but not perfect. I'm going to try it again over the next few evenings, just to see if it gets any better. I think if I see the same things over several nights, I can confirm? Thanks for your help!

Larry, I haven't seen it yet - but your description of the galaxy fits with my notion of how it (by the numbers) should appear in an 8" SCT - really difficult, perhaps 50% likelihood of detection. (I don't have such an SCT but I did look systematically at comparable galaxies with my 7" Mak, where it by the numbers would be <50% likelihood.) So I'd say: good job on the galaxy. Further, what you are describing about the "double" is what I'd expect from the core and the SN, if the visibility of the SN is compromised by the galaxy background. (Again, I haven't yet seen it myself, but this is how it seems in Bill's sketch.) The problem is that the SN is ENE of the core. (In comparison with the photos, Bill's sketch seems a very tiny bit overrotated so the SN and the galaxy elongation seem to be closer to the NE.) If you believe your orientation might be a bit off, then I'd say you've seen it; if on the contrary you are sure of your orientation (SE) then it was something else. What helps in such a case is sketching it relative to the field stars.
