How to corroborate Jupiter details? new
      #5400703 - 09/03/12 08:24 AM

I almost posted this in the beginner's forum, where I post most everything else (being a newbie), but this IS very specifically a planet (Jupiter) question:

This is my second morning in a row of Jupiter spotting and I've sketched it both times but I don't know how to corroborate what I'm seeing. I use Stellarium to tell me which moons were where, so I can label them on my sketch. Io moved a lot since yesterday!

As for the bands, though, how can I see what's where as of the day/time I viewed? I'm aware that my scope flips the image in both directions, so I could adjust for that.

Oh, and basically I'm seeing (from my flipped perspective and with the scope pointed HIGH East but me standing straight up to the eyepiece facing South, Z8 scope): A thicker band North of the equator but with a "flaw" or gap in it, and two thinner bands South of the equator with a smaller "dot" roughly lined up with the flaw in the Northern belt. Oh, and the Southern (to me) pole is darkish like the belt.

I'd U/L a picture but my sketching sucks until I get better.

Observing or sketching Jupiter on a continuing basis is probably the biggest challenge and one of the most enjoyable pursuits in astronomy. Unlike just about everything in the sky, like double stars or galaxies, most of which look exactly the same this eyar and next year and next decade, Jupiter basically displays itself to us in fast motion. Even compared to the moon with its phases, Jupiter is like a time lapse movie speeded up.

Jupiter rotates so rapidly -- every 9.9 earth hours -- that you can watch features move completely across the face in one five-hour observing session. The four Galilean moons are fairly close in and orbit just as rapidly:

Io orbit is 1.769 earth days
Europa is 3.551
Gannymede 7.155
Callisto 16.689

That's whate makes watching moon transits so much fun . . . you can see the progress naked eye.

There is just nothing out there that changes as rapidly and profoundly as Jupiter. No wonder Galileo found it so fascinating!

Go here:

Click "moon/grs"
then use zoom
time can be easily adjusted at top left with those 2 arrow things

I always go to the Planetary Imaging area and see if anyone imaged near me at the time I was observing. I think last time, it was MikeBOKC that had an image up that was at the time I was observing visually.

This is exactly what I do. I am almost always able to find a hi-res image taken about the time I did my own obervations, and this allows me to confirm variable features.

For Io, Ganymede, Mars, and other targets with fixed features (though Mars has highly variable weather) I use Starry Night Pro 6.0.

Since most people don't image Ganymede and Io, I find Starry Nigth Pro to be a great way of seeing what features are facing me at the time of my observations. For these targets, I make my observations "Blind." I observer first and note any details I think I can resolve, then I check with Starry Night Pro to see if those details were indeed rotated into view.

I am afraid that if I look at these tools first, I may "Influence" myself as to what I see. So to keep myself honest, I observer, then confirm.

Hi Capo,

The detail in Jupiter's belts and zones can change over time, but here is a link to my Jupiter Nomenclature page that will help you to identify them:

http://ejamison.net/jupiter_nomenclature.html

Note that for all of my sketches south is at the top.

Hope this helps.
