better refractor new
      #5402148 - 09/03/12 11:51 PM

Which refractor is better- Orion 100 ed f/9 or TAl 100rs f/10? Which gives more detail on jupiter and satyrn and which can hold higher magnifications? What is the maximum magnification that gives details on jupiter on both scopes and which of them can hold higher magnification on planets? Is there any difference between Orion 100 ed and Skywatcher 100 ed and is skywatcher 100 ed better than tal 100? Thank you very much!

I believe the ED scope would have the advantage.
I also think that the brand you get won't matter
much. They might be basically the same.

I have a C4-R which is a 4"f/10 and I like it a lot.
Weather or not it's worth the $$ to get the f/9 ED
version is up to you.

You can get a used 100ED for $400 or maybe a little more.

I can't speak for the TAL, but the ED100 variants are some of the best APO deals out there. Mine was $385 used. It shows virtually no false color and is tack sharp. Typical high-power views can be 200-260 depending on target and seeing. The tubes are also very light-weight on these scopes, requiring less for mounting.

At 4" of aperture, the aperture is going to be the limiting factor for magnification so both will top out around 200x. Sure you can go higher on the moon since it is so bright, but you probably won't see any additional detail with such a small exit pupil. The 100ED will have better color correction, the TAL may be optically superior. But at F9-F10 it doesn't take a genius to make good optics so there won't be much difference. And the better color correction of the ED glass will matter most on bright objects like planets. So I would say the 100ED is probably better for planets. I certainly enjoy planets through mine. I don't notice false color except on the lunar limb when it is off-axis at medium to high magnification.

I had an f/10 Vixen/Celestron 102 and switching to the ED100 did improve the planetary viewing pretty dramatically.
Even at f/10 there is a fair amount of purple haze on the planets in an achromat whether you see the color or not. This tends to lower the resolution a bit.
Both scopes maxed at about 200x, but on a good night with the moon, the ed could look pretty good at 225x whereas the Vixen was a mess over 200x. You will see more detail in the ED than in the Achro.

Having never looked thru tal 100rs, theoretically the 100ed will have slight edge in high power views than the 100mm achro.
They are both still only 100mm, leaving you with aperture fever.

Mechanically, the Tal looks to have a better crayford focuser than the synta clones.
The Tal finder mount looks a bit basic compared to the synta dovetails.
The white tube does look classy compared to the muted battleship gray of orion and the black diamond finish of skywatcher.

My choice would be vixen's version if you can still find one.
