The Wizard via C11 new
      #5395716 - 08/30/12 09:41 PM

Hey Group,

The image was taken about 2 weeks ago from the border of a Yellow/Green zone.

NGC 7380: http://eyegasms.zenfolio.com/p960056752/h40b6ee8a#h40b6ee8a

I was going for max detail in this image - perhaps I went a bit far with the processing, however I'm more or less pleased with the final result.

Opinions welcome,
Mark V

Some good details on a faint target with a little LP nearby.

Well, I looked at your equipment and you have an Atlas like me, but is the Atlas happy with the C11 and the rest of your toys on it.... Seems like to have a lot of counter-weights and so ballance must be quite a challenge...

Thank you for the kind words, gentlemen.

@Scott: I used the star shrinking method from your LRGB tutorial - it seems more effective than Carboni's Make Stars Smaller. Generous of you to post such useful information.

@jerryyyy: The mount is/was operating at max capacity (40 lbs), however, balance was never an issue. I no longer use the ED80 for guiding - choosing instead, a lighter and just as accurate 9x50 finder scope.

Thanks, wonder how old your Atlas is and if it is holding up OK with the weight. I have a new SBIG SST-8300M on order, and am expecting that when I get this expensive camera, will be time to upgrade the C8. The STT has internal OAGing so the whole operation should be relatively light (I hope). My Atlas is very happy with the light C8.

Cheers

My EQ6 is almost 6 years old. As you may know, some of the older models came with that sticky black grease that many people replaced while stripping down the mount. Mine came with the improved white grease, however the mount was still cleaned, regreased and/or the bearings replaced on three separate occasions until things ran smoothly. Much to my surprise, a small washer was found inside near the worm gear! The EQ6 doesn't even have any small washers! I have no idea where it came from... maybe the mount was assembled on a Monday.
Still, with a little TLC, the EQ6 might be the best bang for the buck.

That image looks very nice! But the one I really liked was the one of M57 with that cute little two armed galaxy off to the right! Very good stuff!

@oldstargazer: The M57 shot was taken with a Meade DSI - the colours are a little different, but I think it works. I only wish it were a higher resolution image.

@lunar: Stars remain the biggest challenge for me. I tend to stretch images to the max, then have to bring them back into reasonable balance. I've tried processing the stars separately, but haven't had much success so far.

@mmalik: I've changed my approach to imaging, I now only target one object per night and make sure I have enough good subs - especially with the shorter summer nights.

@mcarroll: Thanks!

Excellent shot...solid details and color especially the stars. And yes it might be time to move to a larger CAT.

I have been very happy with mine (knock on wood). I did a PEC chart and it looked like it had been tweeked, but it was straight out of the box. We are local to Orion and I cross-examined the folks at the store prior to purchase... I am moving up to a new camera (STT 8300M) and with that camera may need to go for the C11 or equivalent, thought the C8 gathers a lot of light, especially for the price.

This hobby is a bit of a bottomless cash pit...

The C11 sucks up a lot of light - especially when reduced to f/5, but there are compromises to be made like extra weight, flexure and the potential for increased guiding errors.
