Back In The Day new
      #5408136 - 09/07/12 11:41 AM

I shot my last frame of film back in 2007 but for nostalgia's sake I've posted some of the photos I took "back in the day" in the deep sky gallery. Most are taken through Meade 6-inch f/5 Schmidt-Newtonian OTAs. They don't hold a candle to those taken by clownfish using an 8-inch f/4 S-N but I didn't have the benefit of his Arizona skies. I actually have dozens of other half-way decent shots on slides that I never got around to scanning, including multiple shots of the same object that I could easily stack. Perhaps I'll spend the coming winter processing them all.

California Nebula (NGC 1499)
M42
Orion's Belt & Sword
Pelican Nebula
M13

Here's my old astrophoto set-up.

I hope I posted the links correctly.

Really enjoyed those. Glad you posted them. Ever get the urge to do film again, maybe with lenses?

Thanks. Yeah, I do get the urge sometimes. Lens stuff is easy compared to prime focus through a scope. I have three 35mm cameras and astro-capable lenses for all of them but they're gathering dust (a figure of speech only - they're all in cases with silica). But what 35mm film still available is any good for astro? I admit I haven't stayed on top of the subject.

I'm sticking with Fuji Provia Color Positive/Slide.

Excellent shots Alen. Back in the Day still goes on for some yet today! Clear Skies & keep shooting!

That's what I intend to do, yet only from "dark" locations, as "in or near any light bubble" don't work well with any kind of emulsion.

Good catches Alen. They are very motivating for me as I've started to experiment more seriously with shooting using my SN-8. Was pushing necessary at 30min exp? You have a PM.

Since I knew I was going with relatively short exposures (in the film world 30 minutes is short) I wanted to increase the density to make scanning easier. A one stop push with E200 doesn't (well, didn't since you can't get it anymore) increase the grain much.

Alen - Kodak Gold - Fuji Superia are very good astro films in 35mm. Nightfly has a number of frames posted on his website with these two films. http://www.flickr.com/photos/12598495@N08/5064000992/in/set-72157622816122424 Find other frames on his site.

Astoundingly good stuff! Gives me hope.

PS. Funny to see that Nightfly's pictures are also included in a Flikr set called "Analog Astrophotography." Funny because film is the original digital technology: each silver halide grain is either exposed or not. It is the density of exposed, randomly distributed grains that gives different shadings. A CCD, OTOH, is essentially analog because the capacitive element at each photosite builds up a charge proportional to the number of photons that hit it, which then leaves the chip as an analog voltage. Being digitized for later processing is incidental (but admittedly of practical necessity). Photosites being arranged in a rectangular array also doesn't make CCD digital, just regularly sampled.
