Hello again all.
Due to a terrible spate of busyness coupled with a dearth of clear nights since spring, I have not done any astronomy for a few months. But that barren patch is at an end and I have sketched Jupiter, as well as observing some asteroids.
The sketch of Jupiter is attached here. Much has changed since last year, the NEB is wide and double in nature with none of the dark barges seen previously.
The GRS seems pale and poorly defined, also separate from the SEB.
Red spot Jr is passing right by the GRS at the moment too.
The EZ looks pale orange with dark streaking across it.
I was lucky enough to catch Europa starting a transit too.
Hope you enjoy.

Go on Chris. I know its a special paper and such. But could you elaborate on the medium? My goto medium isnt what it used to be and oil paints are too laborious.
Please tell!
Your tones are sartelingly excellent.

It's velour paper, which has a kind of fuzzy surface, then I sketch faintly in graphite pencil to set the sketch out right, after which I build up the colours with layers of pastel pencil. That's kind of it really. A bit of limb shading and it's done. Takes a while though.

Do you use a neutral tone, black or white paper Chris? And thanks in advance.
Im guessing neutral black, but the pastels are opaque to show that bright despite a dark background huh?

I use white paper, then build up the colours in layers. It probably would work on black too, but I suspect I'd have to load the pigment on quite thickly and it might not be very stable over time.
I cut the drawing out with a scalpel and mount in my black-paged book, which I think is why you think I draw on black paper.

Thanks again Chris, and terrific festoon captures. I recall that zone was a muddle with festoons detached and patchy if not altogether gone. Nice to see a classic return. The moon looks great!
