Hi all,
What I find interesting with contemporary solar views is that in spite of the approaching solar cycle max, visual activity is relatively low with few small spot groups compared to former max's. With some exceptions, limb proms are often modest too but there have been some spectacular filaments...but none today.
First the H-a view:

Nice work as usual, Mel.
What I find interesting is the 'independent' behavior of the two hemispheres of the sun. The northern hemisphere used to play a major role in this solar cycle until March 2012. As of April 2012, the southern hemisphere has gained in activity.

Tom, Rony, Frank, thanks for the kind words.
Rony, I looked back through my original sketches and your observation of the change of activity from the Northern to the Southern hemisphere seems to be so. I shall try to find out if this is part of the normal cycle.

Hi Mel, I'm looking to get a 60 or 70MM refractor and make a Baader Solar filter in the near future. I was looking at your sketches here. I'm looking at the second one with the 50mm and Baader solar film. Is this what I can expect to see? I'm new to this. What do you call them things coming off the side of the sun, like in sketch #1. Can you not see them when using the Baader solar film? Just trying to see what I can expect to see. Thank you any info you can share with me.

Dennis,
A Baader film filter or glass solar filter will show sunspots as in the second sketch. The prominences on the sun's limb in the first sketch and surface features such as filaments and a few other details use a dedicated scope that can only see the very narrow band of the light spectrum called Hydrogen Alpha.
