How To Add A Planetarium To A Multi-Use Facility new
      #5414323 - 09/10/12 10:58 PM

A local group is keen on building a science centre in our area and they have been able to get some land from the city and some corporate sponsorship.

Our local astronomy society is in discussions with them about how we can get involved.

The centre will be two stories high - 7500 square feet each floor. It will be divided into multiple galleries that will change regularly so that people aren't coming to see the same things all the time.

My question is how do we add a planetarium to a facility where the gallery may be used for other displays and will change regularly?

I was thinking of having them incorporate a dome in one area of the ceiling so we could project and use a small projector using something like Stellarium rather than a huge "in-the-floor" system used in expensive planetariums.

Does anyone have any ideas or thoughts on how to bring a planetarium into a multi-use facility from time to time?

Thank you.

For 11 years I have taught astro labs at East Tenness State University. About 2 years ago they decided to move from a very old "standard" planetarium projector to a new system based on Stellarium. Only one projector bulb for the projector. A PC runs the system. Altho I can't say there have been no glitches overall it works very well. Heads and shoulders over what we had. Not terribly expensive, either.

If you wish I can get the contact info.

Terry

Glad to hear it, Terry. I was wondering about whether using Stellarium and a single projector would be a good route for our society.

Yes, I would appreciate the contact info.

Here ya go: http://digitaliseducation.com/digitarium.html

This is a professional installation. Not using Stellarium and a desk top but a very nice educational facility set up. IIRC there are different models/price points for different sizes of planetariums and objectives of use.

Hope this helps.

I would also check into the Starlab Portable Planetariums.

Thanks but 25K for just the projector is probably more than we will be spending.

Thanks Kevin, but I don't want a portable dome, I want to have the dome permanently in the roof and then just have everything else movable.

Thanks FarrOut,

I followed those links further and came up with some other interesting resources like these:

http://www.lss-planetariums.info

Apparently there is a fork of Stellarium called Nightshade which is made for planetarium use.
