Meade 178ed new lens cell versus old?
      #5424746 - 09/17/12 01:22 AM

I know that Meade at some point began offering replacement lens cells for their 178mm ED refractors to correct the problems with the original cell. Does anyone know how to identify the new supposedly better cell from the original problematic one?

The newer cells have three radial set screws to apply pressure to a spacer ring located between the lens elements. If you are planning to purchase a 152/178ED then you will also need to inspect the spacer ring to make sure it has not been deformed by 'aggressive' tightening of the set screws.
