Currently the list of major door prizes for the hourly giveaways at our September 29 Grand Opening includes:
a $2300 set of TeleVue Ethos eyepieces in a case,
a Meade LS6-ACF 6" LightSwitch go-to scope,
a Celestron NexStar 8SE 8" go-to scope with accessories,
and, just added today, an SBIG ST-i color CCD camera,
with more door prizes to come.
Our thanks to all the manufacturers who will be helping to make the Astronomics Grand Opening the grandest of them all with their presence and their presents. Hope to see you on the 29th.

Might as well piggyback on this post to ask who is going to the grand opening on the 29th . . . the OKC Astronomy Club and Norman North High School Astronomy students will be participating in a star party in downtown Norman that evening, with some solar viewing during the day. It would be interesting to see how many Cloudy Nights devotees from outside the immediate area are making the trek to Norman for the festivities. Question: where are the star party participants to set up during the day and evening? That block in downtown Norman as fairly narriw sidewalks and two-story buildings, so I assume close by?

There are a few areas by the James Garner statue for set up. Reasonable traffic and access to the sky.

Here's a pic of the area Michael refers to just a few doors west of the showroom. Train station in the left background; James Garner statue out of frame to the right. Plenty of room to set up, but not exactly a dark sky site. Oh, well, the Moon will be full that night anyway. It will be nice and quiet when the trains go by at 50 miles per hour 50 feet away, too.

Boy, you have me wishing I could make the 1000+ mile trip there. I could set up with my refractor out there and then mosy over close to the railroad tracks to see an oncoming train. If you want to bring out the kid in me, get me close to a set of railroad tracks. I also wish I could be up there to get my crack at "winning" the LS 6" or SE 8".

I still plan to be there and may bring a non astronomical friend who is an engineer so may well had to the amount of drool the objects d'art will require safety screens for. For Mike and especially Fred: would there be interest in simple display of a C-8 purchased from Fred by me in December of 1981, as an example of early salel? Facts are I still own it, still use it, still like it. I'll bring it if you are interested. If I do, it will bear a sigh,: Not for Sale or Trade in. Historical purposes only." The latest addition to the list of prizes is a $2000 retail Explore Scientific ES127 5" ED triplet apochromatic refractor. Yummie. I may have to enter the prize drawing myself. Over $10,000 in door prizes being given away at the Astronomics grand opening September 29 from 9am to 6pm.

Any live web camera feeds happening at the Grand Opening?
Some of us live a little too far away to be there in person

445 miles for me. IF I am off this weekend, me and my son will be heading up Friday night. Not getting my hopes up though. But sounds like a few people will leave VERY happy.

Alas, the proverbial last minute "thing" has come up and I will not be able to attend. Maybe I can still get to Norman and see the store in a few months. Good luck for a grand grand opening and at least I still have the C-8 I bought at Astronomics back in December, 1981. Still have it, still use it still like it! Clear skies and clean glass, Mike

Not really. The event is just the event. The Manufacturer reps are here all day. Solar observation should be going on all day, weather permitting, and lunar observation will be going on until around 10ish.
Hourly drawings for smaller prizes, then the big guns get drawn for at 5.

Are you opening at the regular 10 a.m. time on Saturday, 9/29? What time will the store close on 9/29, as well. I saw usual hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, just wondering if that still holds for the Grand Opening? Thanks, and looking forward to my first visit to a real bricks and mortar astronomy store!

Wayne Reynolds and I will drive up for the day on Saturday morning from DFW. Is there anyone else in the area that would like to ride along?
