Anyone gone to one of these conventions? It appears 2013 is in Atlanta which is close to me and thought it would be fun.

Cheers! The ALCon (Astronomical League Conventions) are really nice and are more aimed at paper presentations and side trips, than observing (although that can be a part of it).
The Atlanta event is scheduled for Wednesday, July 24, through Saturday, July 27, at our Fernbank Science Center in Decatur. We're reserving the 500-seat planetarium for all presentations and will have astro-equipment vendors on hand as well. There will be two side trips -- one night to nearby Agnes Scott College and its William C. Bradley Observatory (which is the actual birthplace of the Atlanta Astronomy Club, back in 1947) and another side trip on early Saturday afternoon to the club's Walter F. Barber Observatory site near Villa Rica (complete with a roll-off observatory with a 20-inch reflector, a separate club-building and more). The awards dinner on Saturday evening caps the event. Lodging for out-of-towners has been arranged, as well as free shuttle bus service between the venues. Please consider joining us! -- Ken in Atlanta

Ken, I hope to make it. Thanks for giving a heads up on what kind of event it was. I was wondering if it was mostly lectures during the day. Do does Astro League usually publish who is speaking and when?

To all,
We've tweaked things a bit to make sure we (hopefully) break even and have also added a third side trip to the upcoming ALCon 2013 event scheduled for July 24 - 27 here in metro Atlanta.
The third side trip will be to the Atlanta Astronomy Club's dark sky observing site about 90 miles east of Atlanta at the Deerlick Astronomy Village (it's about 15 miles south of Washington, Georgia). More at http://www.deerlickgroup.com/index.php
