Atlas Galaxias, projected release 2014 new
      #5418474 - 09/13/12 12:58 AM

I stumbled upon a site which makes available on disk a variety of star atlases (many of them out of print):

www.stellarum.de/english/index.htm

At the very bottom of the page it's announced that a multi-DVD set will be available in 2014, containing a milky way atlas created from 3-color POSS plates, to 1 arcsecond resolution.

I'm pumped!!

milky way ... the last astrocartographic frontier. it's surprising to me how many amateur astronomers do not know the basic landscape features, distances and dynamic details of this enormous formation. inspires in me a feeling of regret similar to what i feel for people who have never seen the grand canyon, or yosemite valley, or a total solar eclipse.

Grand Canyon and Yosemite are too crowded. I love Big Bend, to me it is what a National Park should be. But to each their own.

One of these days I will see a total eclipse...

To clarify, Bruce did say "have never seen", not marveled at the masses of people at those locations.

Yup. The former 2 have felt like an amusement park to me. I was told by a ranger that 90% of visitors to Yellowstone never get out of their car.

I'd rather go hiking in my favorite park in my own state. Much closer, I'm still out enjoying nature, and I can set up a telescope to observe the skies at the end of the day. Everything else is good enough on HD TV ... without the bears.

You gotta get below the rim, Preston. Remote Grand Canyon back country is as wild--and uncrowded--as wilderness gets.

A few years ago I went to the GC the week of Thanksgiving.
It was wonderful, even above the rim
-great weather
-few people
-no waiting in line for food
--at least until Thursday

How did this thread get, and pretty much remain, derailed?
