What do you do with your handset? new
      #5428137 - 09/18/12 07:49 PM

I find the side mount horrible. I have given up on it. Now I either place it gingerly on the inside of the fork and hope it stays there, or just let it hang. I know hanging it is probably very bad to do. I was thinking of doing some velcro or something else.
So what have you guys done?
Thanks
Sbob

I use the side mount it is fine for me. But with my old NexStar 11 GPS I put velcro on the fork and the back of the HC. That worked well too.

I agree, the side mount is horrible. I'm constantly bumping in to it in my obs.

The side mount was designed for daytime use only!

Velcro does for now but a decent articulated arm on the right hand side of the forks would be a worthwhile project. Add to it a flexible coiled cord. Mmmmm...coiled rubber cord!

Remember the single-fork NexStar series of scopes? Or the NexStar GPS scopes? The hand paddle fit into a recess in the arm and concealed the cord as well. A simple and elegant solution in my humble opinion.

However, people whined and complained that they couldn't see the display or buttons so Celestron 'improved' the CPC scopes and gave us the 'wonderful' setup we have now.

Be careful what you wish for...

Don

I have NO problems with my side Mount...and I still use the "Wing Thing" with my single armed 8i..

HC just falls into place in the holder ..Whats the big deal...???

Velcro ... always a good solution ..

The big deal for me is the fact that the cord exits the handset at the TOP of the handset.

I fumble with attempting to stick the HC into the supplied bracket every time due to the cord location. Exit the cord out the bottom...perfect!

Speaking of the cord it's too short and just plain cheap. I guess the uncontrolled spring-back rate the cord exhibits would come in handy for swatting mosquitoes.

I use this! The pic shows a 4SE, but It's "one size fits all". And on my NS11GPS, the HC is on the right Fork so I easily reversed It to accommodate.
I originally bought It for the reasons you all state (I used to leave my HC on the Fork base, but was always worried about It).

Now that I have It, I find It excellent for Initial Star Alignment as well as centering objects or slewing at the eyepiece as you merely hit the up/down/left/right buttons without ever having to look away from the object.
Selecting from the Menu is a breeze as well and can be done with only one hand (If necessary).

Here's the web page It anyone's interested!

Mike

I leave it alone on the left fork; my iPad running SkySafari+ is in a RAM mount on the right fork. I still need to do something about wire management, but the setup works.

I have my CPC800 on a wedge so I use the wedge's hand controller holder generally.

Even more recently I got an extender cord so I could have the hand controller inside and hook it up to my computer via the serial cable (as I kept having USB conflicts with a different thing every night when I used the serial-USB adapter and NexRemote - direct serial, no more issues) so I generally have the HC velcroed to a table somewhere between my scope and my inside computer control since I dont use the HC for operating the scope and that keeps it out of the way.

I believe the simplest is Velcro it to where you find it convenient. For me, if I'm using the GoTo I find the fork side holder just fine, but I have a Celestron CG5 Hand Control Holder that attaches to the tripod leg also, and I use that one if I'm doing alignment, or sky surfing with the Alt Az directional buttons. I know the CG5 type leg holder was available separate from Celestrons Website I think under Parts/Accessories for around $15.00 total. I picked mine up through Hands On Optics for $5.00 a while back. I don't know if it was a stock item, or something they had just lying around, but when I saw it I knew I had something better than Velcro for me as I find Velcro always attracts hair, lint and dirt, not to mention the fact that I would probobly cover the scope & tripod with it trying to determine the best location, The tripod leg type holder is very secure and it reduces my location options to 3!
