Pages: 1 chemist super member Reged: 10/09/10 Loc: Central Texas Triangular Asterism in Pisces       #5433684 - 09/21/12 11:52 PM Edit   Reply   Quote Quick Reply   I just happened upon a very attractive asterism in Pisces at RA 23h16m36s, DEC -01deg35m12s. It's a near perfect equilateral triangle of three stars with a fourth star in the center. East of the triangle is a line of three stars pointing to it. Looks best at low power (20x - 30x). Stars are mag 7 and 8. Reminds me of the Stargate asterism. Is anyone familiar with this one? I haven't seen it mentioned in any of the asterism lists I have. It's an instant favorite of mine now. Co-ordinates. FOV 1.5 degs. North is uppermost: East is to the left. Faintest stars to magnitude +13. Reminds me of the Stargate (asterism) in Corvus as well. Except instead of a single star in the center of the triangle, the Stargate has another much smaller triangle of stars rotated about 45 deg from the outer one. Anyone iterested in the Stargate, the location is: RA 12h 35m 59s, Dec -12° 03'09". Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stargate_(asterism). Seeing the whole thing requires dark skies as the dimmest star in it is about Mag 11.5. Good hunting! The center star is actually a double, WDS STF2995, 4.6" sep. It just keeps getting better. The more I look at it the more I keep thinking "rocketship" rather than "kite". I have always called this Kohoutek's Arrow since the comet passed almost right over this on Jan 20, 1974. Visually it is pretty nice. This has never been listed on any asterism lists as far as I can tell. But it is worth finding. Someone mentioned Rocket Ship which is what I always see when looking.
