It's too bad those several 23+ readings on Cherry Springs are posted there. They are extremely unrealistic...and lead to faulty expectations. Dave, that was a very interesting set of articles you referenced in your last post!

The map shows several potential wells almost *right on top* of CSSP, yet the state has purchased the drilling rights in a buffer zone around much of the park (but not to the west) and plans on not allowing drilling there to protect the park. This map looks like an industry “wish list”, or maybe a propaganda thing to attract investors, or something from the ‘anti’ folks to drum up support. However, in areas east of Potter Co I have seen the green boxes of drilled wells dot the landscape quite close to each other (but no current drilling in the area).

There was a recent article in ChoudyNews ( article ) about why the expected (by many) level of drilling, jobs, endless money, etc, has not happened (at least as yet). Summary: Currently gas prices are too low to justify the drilling expense, and there is not enough current pipeline capacity for even the current well production. The industry predicts things will pick up soon (which they’ve claimed for several years).

I wasn't at BF this year, but at my camp in the Adirondacks. The usual SQM reading there is 21.6 or so, and 2 or 3 years ago that was what I was getting at Cherry Springs. This year it seems a little brighter, but haze can make a big difference, causing brigher skies, while ground fog blocking low level light sources can result in darker sky (an effect often seen at Stellafane when the town fogs over while it is still clear on the hilltop).

In June during the CSSP I got readings of 21.6 to 21.7 at Cherry Springs with my SQM-L.

That’s what I’ve gotten at the park on very good nights over the past 5 or so years. As I remember it, the Cherry Springs Star Party this year had one really good and dark night, and the others had some haze and added sky brightness.
