Jim,
The scope and mount look killer, really nice.I noticed your in Whitestown.I've many times fished in Eagle Creek out your way (little N of Zville) as well as star gazed as a kid in the farmland of the area. First light anytime soon?

Thanks! Eagle Creek is a great park and we spend quite a bit of time there. Well, the clouds are gone but we have 20-25 MPH winds, so I'm thinking first light will not be tonight. Clear sky clock shows terrible seeing and transparency. Keeping my hopes up for tomorrow night.

I hereby ban clouds and rain from the skies of Indiana!

There. That should help.

An hour and a half outside. Wind stopped. 10 pm and seeing improving. No star test yet. Having too much fun. Barely any color on the edge of the moon. I had to look for a very small, dim yellow edge. If I wasn't looking for it, I never would have noticed it.

Clusters and double stars, oh my! Just clean split Sigma Cas with a 3.2" separation at a bit over 100x using the EZ 8.8 82degree.

Gotta go, I've seen more stuff tonight than I have in months. Back to the doubles and clusters.

Dang, Jim, that worked! Thanks. Only one day of new astro equipment curse. About the best I've ever had after a new purchase. Jim, who do you know??

An hour later and the seeing started going the wrong way. Maybe a star test of the optics tomorrow night. What I saw tonight has me pretty excited about this scope and mount.

My first alignment with a computerized EQ mount went extremely well. I plopped the CG-5 on the sidewalk out in front of the house, looked at the level and it was dead on. Good start! Next, two quick scoots to the right put Polaris almost dead center in the sight hole where the polar scope goes. A quick twist of the azimuth adjustment knobs put it where I wanted it.

Mounted the OTA to the red tape markers I had added earlier and powered up the mount. I did a two star align and then added 3 more stars for good measure. Every single object I asked NexStar to go to, ended up almost dead center of my 100x EP. I was all over the sky with maybe 40 objects and it nailed every one. I am impressed!

The EON was showing me way more than I had anticipated for a 4.7" scope in my light polluted skies. Granted, I spent most of my time on clusters, double stars and planetaries. Within the limits of the seeing, I was getting beautiful little pinpoints of colorful stars on a dark background.

I spent about 10 minutes on the moon as I mentioned earlier and even though I was an hour past prime time, I had a great view of the Lunar "X". The color of the moon was very neutral. Color is VERY controlled on this scope.

All in all a surprisingly great first light for the CG-5 and the EON. I am beyond happy and I doubt the star test, when I get a chance to do it, will hold any bad surprises.

I used Sissy Haas's Double Star book tonight for the first time, too.

Good report.
But I was under the impression that this scope used Ohara FPL53.

Steve,

All I know is that Orion advertises FPL-53 glass. Not sure who's it is.

The EON does use Ohara FPL-53, the mating element is from Schott.
