After viewing my sketch on someone else's computer, I found that not all the nebulosity displayed may be what I intended. Apparently my computer's contrast or other visual settings are different. So you may see a harder edge to the nebulosity than I intended.

Great sketch, dbosh! The only issue I can think of is that you would have seen more nebulosity in your 8". Beautiful artistry nevertheless!

This is my first sketch since 1992. It was done from memory a day after my observation to "convey what I see" in response to a thread in the Deep Sky Observing Forum about color in the Orion Nebula complex. The observations were at 98.5x to 105x through an aging 25" Dobsonian.

Hey star drop!
Must have been exciting to be able to see those striking color ranges in M42 through an eyepiece versus a photography! The largest telescope I had ever seen the Orion Nebula through was a 16" Lightbridge, and the views were awesome. Through a 25" it must be astounding! Great observation!

Very nice Jupiter sketch, dweller25! I can only imagine what it looked like at the business end of your telescope. Never seen three shadow transits going on at one time before. Must have been glorious!

My first astro sketech ever was from 1963 September 29, when as a 10-year-old with my new telescope, I observed the Moon in a Tasco 60 mm refractor at x60.

Hey Dave,
Reminds me of some of the sketches I did in 1970 as a 12 year old budding amateur! For a drawing made back in the 60's, it sure does look pristine. I still have my first observations too, but they are starting to show their age.
Great job and thanks for sharing!

Now this isn't going to blow anyone away with detail, but I think I captured the diffraction ring ok and the way they appeared at the eyepiece. I used my new Wacom and GIMP. I may tweak it even further, but I have to get more familiar with GIMP, I would like to add the inner diffraction ring that was glimpsed as well. I'll have to post some questions in the double-star forum, because some info I have read shows this to actually be a triple, but I only saw the single companion.

This digital sketching is going to be fun! I think I will use the touchpad on my laptop to plot the stars next time, and the Wacom to get the real details worked in, my hands were a bit shaky with the pen, and I didn't have a good idea of the distance between the pen and the pad itself, so I was initially plotting way off.

Revived thread~
Here is my first celestial sketch, from a naked eye observation. http://imgur.com/a/J5Qjk#0
This was after 11:00 PM January 3rd, 2012. I was on a favorite hillside overlooking the city of Portland, OR. The temp was in the high 30s, low 40s. I noticed that as I lay back the surrounding trees formed an oval frame for my field of vision. I was probably the only person in the park and was so taken with the sight of Orion, Taurus, the waxing gibbous moon (didn't know the term then), Jupiter, the moon's icy halo, and a contrail that stretched the sky, that I rummaged through my pack looking for a means to record the moment. I hadn't been carrying a camera, nor a journal, I had no receipts, no scraps, only one pen and some breath mints. The mint tin had an insert. I've made sure to carry a few pens and a journal if not some paper since.

First sketch, huh? Okay...sounds like a fun topic.
Sketching has such aesthetic beauty, something mystical a camera can't render. It turns out to be quite a fascinating aspect of our love for observing. And, it might even teach us to actually see and appreciate the subject, our instruments, and even viewing conditions.

And the first, and only, sketch of the moon. Hat tip to anyone who can (and do) sketch that baby. It's a difficult subject, more than a few do it beautifully.
Now, gotta catch up on this mega thread.

Hi,
This was not exactly my first sketch, but close to it. It was the second deep-sky sketch that I ever made.
It was of the Orion Nebula and I made it on November 9th-10th, 1974, from 11:30 PM - 12:45 AM.
I was using Edmund 4" F/10 reflector. Magnification 45x.
In my observing notes I recorded: "A beautiful glowing object.". Although the nebula appeared green in color I used yellow to represent it in the sketch.

Did my first last Sunday. I'll have to scan it in. Here is the MSPaint I did for my MSWord log. My wife and I agreed on a telescope for Christmas. We have had it for 2 weeks.
