So last night I went out to do a few sketches. Since I've only done a few previously, maybe about 10 or so, I decided to start over on my Messier sketch hunt. So here are my first sketches on my new hunt for Messiers. I needed to take a break from photographing, and start examining some of these objects the old fashioned way. Took observation notes, spent quite a bit of time examining these objects before I even started writing or sketching them. Such a different feeling than finding an object and attaching a camera. Can't wait to get out to do more.

Thank you both very much. I debated cropping the notes but figured it adds to the actual sketch. Since these are my first sketches in a while and I'm taking it more seriously than before I'm starting small with some open clusters before I break into nebula and galaxies.

Mike,
two wonderful pieces of work. I agree, notes add something priceless to sketches.

Thank you very much Jef, Jean, and Tom. Now if the moon would go back to new, and the clouds go away I could get a couple more sketches in!
Clear skies.

Those look great. I assume pencils on white paper? I find open clusters tougher (or at least more tedious) than other DSO's to sketch.

Matt - Thank you. Yes white sketch paper I tore out of a Strathmore Sketchbook, a 2H pencil, and scanned it in. I find that the scanner didn't pick up the slight glow I put on the cluster of M52. Everything I tried to do to replicate it in PS only made it look worse. Open clusters are a bit tedious, and time consuming, but a lot of fun at the same time.

Thanks, and thanks for showing those Bas van Krieken. Looks like a pretty cool little app, wish there was something like that on the iPod! Does that show the objects as they appear in the specified telescope?
