CCD in a freezer new
      #5437999 - 09/24/12 12:22 PM

Hi guys.

I took some images of Jellyfish nebula during Merritt Star Quest a couple of weeks ago. The sky was very dark and the images look pretty good but the problem is that I set the CCD's temperature -35C while I'm taking them but I cannot reach that temperature here at my home even at night so I cannot take darks. Stupid me! It was around -5C in Merritt, BC but it is around 12C home at night.

I read that people put their CCD in freezers (the frozen part) to take darks but is it safe for my CCD?
Does anybody here in CN do that?

Thank you!

yes, i do that to take dark and bias frames. just need to put a sign on the freezer door that says "do not open" (so then your kids can say..."dad, i opened the freezer, is that OK?) :-)

How do you prevent from CCD window getting condensation when you remove the camera from the freezer? Kevin Nelson from QSI does not recommend to put cameras in a freezer for condensation reasons.

Peter

Yep, I put my SBIG CCD in the refrigerator, not the freezer to do dark frames, not a problem at all!

Place the camera in a ziplock bag while in the fridge and disconnect the cables and seal up the bag before you take it out. Let it come back to ambient then remove it from the bag.

edit...I imagine Nelson is more concerned about condensation on the circuit boards than the window.

Yeah, ziplock works if you can fit the camera in it.

I've had trouble with noise/banding when shooting darks in the fridge... It only happened in the fridge, so I concluded it was due to AC noise, but I have zero proof.

I guess it's Alienware. Pretty cool, isn't it?

Lol, yeah it's a pretty old alienware, the M15x. THe ones they sell now are a second generation case that is much more robust. This one is pretty much falling apart. If you look at the lower left side fo the screen you can see. I have some twist-ties holding it together. Works great for running astrogear with the red backlighting and of course it's got the whole space alien theme going. Oh, and it runs about 10 bajillion degrees hot, so it doesn't dew since it just evaporates whenever it touches the thing.
